connecting to online game servers

I need some help. When I try and join an online game for battlefield 1942 it says "unable to connect to server." Why is that, and how do I fix it? I mean I need it broken down for me because I am kinda computer ignorant still, but I am working on that.

um..... i have no clue what your talking about but i feel bad that no one has replied. being a gamer myself the only thing i could think of is you probly need to update your verson patch or sumtin. or maybe the server is running a mod that u dont have make sure u check the server details. sorry if i wasnt any help.

First of all what type of modem are you using? Dialup or Broadband? If you have Broadband (DSL/Cable modem) is it going through a router?

you need to buy a copy of the game to get a serial key that functions for online play.

you type it in during the install correctly.
there are 2 types of keys, ones that are printed and ones that are generated. generated keys are used to install the game, but they arent allowed to connect to servers because they weren't purchased. the key thats printed on the back of a cd case is allowed to connect to servers. do you need to know where to get a printed one?

A printed one? I don't follow. I entered the key on the back of the cd correctly when I installed the game, but when I try and join a game, it tries to connect to the server and then says, error could not connect to server.

well make sure your firewal isnt blocking it. and that the server accepts connections from dial-up users. also try accessing the console for errors by pressing ~ or `
meaning it was printed on the back of the original cd case

Hello Irish, try downloading the latest patch from:

also, when you try to connect to a server, make sure it isn´t one incompatible with your version, the servername should be gray if it´s a different version than yours! (they could be running an expansion pack such as secret weapons or a mod like desert combat)
