Windows XP Setup Loop

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have seen several posts with similar problems, but none exactly like this and certainly none of the solutions have worked, so...

My PC seems to be stuck in an upgrade loop.

Firstly, it kept crashing with a kernel_data_inpage_error so I upgraded some drivers and ran a full system scan, checkdisk and repair. Then on reboot it told me that my ntoskrnl.exe file was corrupt, so I replaced it.

Now, on reboot my PC will begin to boot, show the Windows XP logo and then switch to 'Setup is being restarted' screen then reboot and repeat.

I have tried everything I can. When I use the XP CD I am told that it is already in the process of trying to upgrade and do I want to continue the upgrade, which I tried. I also used the Recovery Console to try to repair the install.

None of this has made any difference. So, it is as if it is in the process of upgrading which never finishes.

Sorry for the length of this, but I wanted to give you all the details :-)

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance

it sounds like youre going to have to format and do a clean install.

Meaning, do not select continue the upgrade. Do a fresh install.

Redwench is right, you need to do a clean install. This means you'll put the xp cd back in, select install win xp, from the drop-down menu, select
"new install" and not "upgrade". This should work fine.
