SOYO + Kingston = Sucks... Help

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

This is my mobo:
http://www.soyousa.com/products/proddesc.php?id=37
This is the new ram stick I just bought:
http://www.ec.kingston.com/ecom/con...VR266X64C25/256

Here's the deal. I have a 256MB PC2100 184-Pin DDR-RAM stick and I bought this new one (on top). I tried to simply add it to one of the expansion slots of the mobo. Began to boot up just fine, I was happy. Windows 2000 "Starting Up." Bam! My poor computer reboots all on its own. I stay cool, probably resolved in the reboot. AGAIN. Sudden reboot right after Starting Up finishes.

So, I move them around and try all possible different combinations (different slots for each ramstick). Same shit for all of them. I remove both ramsticks and put the Kingston one alone. Tried all three expansion slots. On slots 1 and 3 the ram stick simply allowed the computer to turn on and stay on the "checking ram." Basically nothing else happened. On slot 2 it simply didn't work. The computer turned on but absolutely no display.

So, I check again with my old ram and it works just fine... what the hell is going on? Somehow I don't think its the ramstick but I'll try to return it and get a new one and see how it goes. Any hints?

Thanks in advance.

yup, you got a bad dimm. just exchange it at the store.

It's just weird. Too much coincidence that two ramsticks are defective (I had bought another one over eBay a long time ago and the computer had boot up perfectly but the ramstick would begin to fail after a while. Things began to stop working and stuff began dissapearing from my desktop. Symptoms dissapeared after I removed it... I have bad luck with computers dammit... especially ram.

if its the same motherboard, you might be getting too much power to the ram.

Posted by: p3ngu!n

Explain?

Posted by: ZeRo_MaXwInG

The electric current going to the RAM is too high, therefore causing these anomalies.

Posted by: p3ngu!n

And I can fix... how?

Posted by: redwench

if that is the problem, which is highly unlikely, youd have to replace the motherboard.

Posted by: p3ngu!n

Somehow I don't think that's it...

Posted by: redwench

i said it was unlikely. but its either that or bad luck :P

Okay, I got a new DIMM and it worked just fine. But my computer restarted on me a while ago. Not sure if it has to do with the RAM. I'll keep you informed...

Okay, now I run Civilization III PTW and the first time I did, the computer rebooted on me, now, after a while of playing, it gave me an error. I doubt it has to do with the installation but I am reinstalling now. I highly suspect it's the ram though I pray that it is not the case. Is there ANY way I can check for defective ram or errors in ram or if two ram sticks don't work well in my motherboard? Some program?

EDIT: Why must my computer be such a ****ing bitch to me!? Now even Mozilla crashes on me often. It NEVER did that before... Help... I even tried flashing the BIOS... Mozilla keeps crashing anyway and so does IE, when I go to certain pages. I'm gonna go crawl in a corner and cry now...

ok, were now looking at heat or the motherboard. grab a temp monitor, one that logs. GOGOGOGO

Posted by: p3ngu!n

What am I looking for? Motherboard temperature?

Posted by: p3ngu!n

Here, I think this is it...

Posted by: redwench

thats it, although that cpu temp looks ludicrously low with that board temp. thats a high board temp if its correct. time for ghetto cooling. open your case up and stick a floor fan in front of it.

Even if I COULD do that, I don't have a floor fan. Is there NOTHING else I can do?

Posted by: redwench

you can try just opening up the case. preferably stick it in front on an ac vent/unit. you must have ac if you dont have a fan.

How about this:

Or this?

those fans would probably be a good idea IF your problem is heat, which is starting to look likely. go borrow a floor fan.

Posted by: p3ngu!n

I'll be grabbing one of those babys anyway, I need to cool down the mobo regardless of the ram. Which one do you recommend? Besides, it REALLY seems like it is because I'm right now running on one ramstick (the new one) and it's running perfectly.

Posted by: redwench

the blower would be better if you have room for it.

Posted by: p3ngu!n

I don't. Thats the problem. I can't have a goddamn fan next to my comp. Thats why I don't do it, otherwise I would.

Posted by: redwench

er.....the blower goes inside your case

you do have at least 4 inches free behind the comp, preferably 6? and several inches around any intake grills?

if this was a computer that was custom built, and u got new ram sticks and all, and youre tired of all these problems, simply just buy a new computer thats made by a popular company such as dell, gateway, compaq, and sony. by the way dont get e-machines,theyre bad. theres no such thing as having bad luck with computers. if this didnt help you, then reply to me through a private message.

also, the computers made by a company have a really good built in fan in the computer to cool off all the circuits.
