Please post what you're favorite book is, I have a little free time and want to read some good stuff.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

The last good book(s) I read is the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan... haven't really found the time to read books in the last 5 years - except tech manuals

Posted by: TheeMon

the sword of shannara
(allso the voyage of the jerle shannara[3 books] is a good book, its 1 giant book cut into 3 smaller ones)

Posted by: SpecOpsHoov

Favorite book? Frankenstein ranks among my favorites.

Posted by: AK47

On The Road

Posted by: kennealy33

Anything by Michael Crichton's great. His newest book Timeline is awesome and soon will be coming out on the big screen(not that that's a suprise)

Posted by: Withnail

Against a Dark Background by Iain M. Banks. or Walking on Glass by Banks as well..In fact any of his sci-fi stuff concerning The Culture is truly breathtaking and stunningly original. He is a UK Scottish-born writer...For horror try H.P.Lovecraft's The Case of Charles Dexter Ward or The Mountains of Madness. Shortish novels both, but darkly sinister hinting at unspeakable madnesses and unholy stenches..hehe...
Good reading!!

I couldn't tell you what my favorite book is.. but the best book I've read recently would be In Legend Born by Laura Resnick. I've also enjoyed pretty much every book by Michael Stackpole.

Posted by: Freak

Yeah, his X wing series is pretty sweet.

For me, The Wheel of Time as well as science fiction by some old school authors like Arthur C Clarke and Isaac Asimov.

Posted by: Spider

Timeline is like four years old. Great book though, I've read it at least three times.
The movie is going to be shitty though. Almost everything Crighton writes becomes a movie and they always suck.

1984.

Posted by: Freak

Timeline - the computer game sucked too.

Posted by: uh...ok

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance

Posted by: redwench

anything by terry pratchett

Posted by: justinious

Here's another vote for the Wheel of Time series by Jordan. Also, The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind is a good read, but not quite as good as Wheel of Time. Finally, Roger Zelazny's Amber books round out my top three fantasy picks.

If you are more into Sci-Fi than Sword and Sorcery, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is a classic. Another favorite of mine is Job: A Comedy of Justice by Robert Heinlein. In fact, I've enjoyed everything I've read by Heinlein.

PS: If you don't like Sci-Fi or Fantasy then I recommend Shogun by James Clavell. It is an awesome book. Just be warned it is a long book and can get very tedious at some points.

1984 by George Orwell, Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stephenson.

Neuromancer by William Gibson (and all linked novels), Snow Crash and Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson.

Dragonlance Chronicles Trilogy, Dragonlance Legends Trilogy, The Seventh Gate series, and the Rose of the Prophet Series, all by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman.

The Stand, Dark Tower series, and just about anything Stephen King has written (discounting books written as Richard Bachman).

Edit: I'd like to vote for Wheel of Time, but Path of Daggers totally turned me off of the series. I'll consider giving it another go once he finally finishes the series. I've read all the books leading up to Path of Daggers at least three times though.

This sums up my thoughts on sword of shannara

Posted by: redwench

rofl

Posted by: chaosisreality

Anything by Dean Koontz (With very few exceptions, icebound sucked.....)

and tom clancy's Red Rabbit

Posted by: SpecOpsHoov

I'll never have to read a book again.

Posted by: TheeMon

**** you dude i liked that book :P

Posted by: laborat

I have just finished the "MasterHarper of Pern" by Ann McCaffery. I would also recommend anything by Andre Norton. Fantasy Gamers especially Shadowbaners should like anything by George R. R. Martin. Next up for me this weekend are the Watershed Trilogy by Douglas Niles and the South Beach Diet by Arthur Agatston, M.D. (Since I live exclusively on Carbs don't know if I will finish it.)

I'll second the Dark Tower series, I can't believe it slipped my mind, definately my favorite series. Which is a very hard thing to say.

Posted by: Withnail

Terry Pratchett is feckin' funny I agree with redwench..

Posted by: kennealy33

I, Strahd is also an awesome book for those D&D lovers out there. its also just a good book.

PS I know that Timelines like four years old but its still Crichtons newest to the last of my knowledge!

Quoted for truth.

Lord of the Flies by Golding, Metamorphasis by Franz Kafka.

Posted by: I_Know_Nothing

The Once and Future King by EB White(I think)

Posted by: Preacher

Favorites:
1, The Bible.
2, The Gift of the Magi(Not fair being a short story)
3, The Lady or the Tiger(same)
4, The Necklace(again)
5, Cain(relatively clean, religious "thriller", theologicly incorrect thoough. Was supposed to be made into a movie with Bruce Willis as the leading actor, which would probably be a bad move since then it'd have to be made room for lots of additional cursing to fit his resume.)

Posted by: INeedHelp

The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons by Dan Brown, Without Remorse, Rainbow Six by Tom Clancy

Posted by: Ocean

Gray's Anatomy
The Elegant Universe
The Emporer's New Mind
Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right

i also love the oreilly reference books. my first was the flamingo. great reads for the techies.

Wha? no votes for harry potter?

Posted by: CobraCommander

By the way my favorite book is Gödel/Escher/Bach by Douglas Hofstadter. Kind of mathy, but very humorous and interesting.

Or in that same vein, Logic, Logic and Logic by George Boolos.

This is a person who has not read The Long Walk.

Posted by: Null Actor

This is true.

Although they're not novels like you guys are mostly talking about, I read anything by Michael Moore...

Right now I'm reading:

The stories behind America's most Outrageous TV Show ADVENTURES IN A TV NATION

Ugh.. I wish I knew about Michael Moore and his TV show in 1993 or whatever when it aired

Posted by: redwench

kama sutra

Posted by: jungles_mcbeef

My god. I think you will be reading for the next millenium if you want to get through all these suggestions.

May I ask which books you actually might read?

Posted by: Cettie

Another good read---Lily Dale by Christine Wickers

Posted by: slugo3

good sci-fi books.

one of my favorite series has to be from David Brin even though I'm not a fan of most of his books, I loved the "uplift triliogy". the first three are some of my favorite books.

James P. Hogan
I reccomend the "giants series" or "voyage from yesteryear"

Posted by: laborat

Elmer Gantry by Sinclair Lewis

Cat in the hat by Dr. Seus

Some of my favorite books are one from the Forgotten Realms series... (some of my others were already posted, so I thought I'd try being different, but at least I'm not lying )

I just recently read Battle Royale by Koushun Takami and I thought it was great. Basically it's the story of a group of Middle Schoolers sent to a Deserted Island and they are given weapons and they have to fight to the death. A lot of people compared it to Lord of the Flies, and a bunch of people went mental when they heard that. Anyway, it's a graphic book, lots of death, carnage and mayhem. I did see the movie adaptation, and let me see the book was a lot more graphic than the movie, but of course book to movie translations usually arent that good. Anyway, give it a whirl, it's a fast read, at least it was for me.

Posted by: trekpsycho

I vote for the wheel of time also. If you're into space opera type shoot-em-ups anything by David Weber. And I like anything by Robert Heilein.
Some good sci-fi comedy try Spider Robinson's Callahan Series. I also like The Lord of the Rings, probably read it 20- times. Asimov's Foundation series. And any Star Trek book!

Posted by: Spider

I could understand Star Wars books, but good god why in the hell would anyone waste their time reading a Star Trek book? What do they do in the books? Anything different from the multiple TV series and ten movies? Are they any better than the video games? Because goddamn do they suck.

I just got into this conversation with a friend of mine last night who's finally giving DragonLance a try. He finished all three books of Chronicles in two weeks, and is about to start on Legends. Ah, it brings back memories.

(And that picture was taken 4 years ago, I have added some more since then).
