Sound problem....

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have an ASUS A7V333 motherboard and using the "C-Media , and CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device" I think there is a problem with the sound after I've installed a new 120GB hard drive (partitioned into 3 drives)

Now whenever I have music playing in the background, and when I open a program, the sound seems to hang thing or freezes or slowing things down...even slow down the mouse too... the sound of the music starts to drag or sometimes repeat some part of the music playing, just like those old 'record player'... and not very stable... so what do you think could be wrong?

Could it be I don't have enough memory? I have 512Ram though, and have 60GB (partition in 3 drives) for primary hard drive, and just installed 120GB (partition in 3 drives) for secondary.

I've also updated to the newest sound card driver from ASUS.. but still the problem is there.. Can anyone help? Thanks...

What program are you using to play music?

Too far you have gone my child,
Seek the wrong answer you have.

er....

check to see if the sound card is sharing irqs with anything.

Posted by: Kristine

mostly Winamp(V2.91) or Window media player(v7.01)... I think it happens to any other music program...

I don't know anything about irqs...

it used to working fine... but after I installed the new hard drive.. Tthat's when this problem came up.... The new hard drive is working fine though...

Any more ideas?

I sometimes have the same problem in Winamp, but only when I have several other programs running aswell. Check to see if you have any unnecessary programs running.

Posted by: Kristine

hm... but I really don't have any unnecessary programs running in the back though... I started to test out things after I reboot my computer.. so I start everything fresh...
The way I tested was I first open Winamp and play a song, and after that I tried opening Photoshop, and notice some dragging and cracking of the song... and the even worst dragging and slowing sound (like in slow motion) comes when I open a Photoshop (PSD) file, and it eventually made me stop the song and let it continue open. It's really weird, because it never happened before... so I really had no ideas

Posted by: Kristine

Also, when I copy files or unzip files... the mouse is very slow, and it never was like this before.. After finish copying or unzipping files, the mouse is back to its speed again.... so I don't know what's going on...

the sound card is either sharing an irq with something (probably the hard drive) or you have icky things running in the background. if youre running XP, pull up the task list and look it over to start with.

IRQ

No, I'm using Windows 2000...

DMA mode is not enabled on your new harddrive.

Once you enable this, all your problems should fix themselves. Grab the VIA 4in1 drivers, and when you install them, make sure to enable DMA mode.

If you've already installed the drivers, go to device manager, and find the IDE controllers, go to properties, and then make sure DMA is enabled.

Posted by: Kristine

I've just checked... my new hard drive is under the transfer mode of "DMA mode"....... what else can I do?

Posted by: Null Actor

Well, it still sounds like DMA isn't properly enabled. Do you have the latest via 4in1 drivers installed? If you don't, there could be issues cause of that.

Also you might doublecheck that your bios is set to autodetect the mode. If the bios has it set to PIO mode by accident, it doesn't matter what windows thinks is enabled.

I don't know if I have the latest via 4 in 1 drivers installed...it was like 1 years ago when I set up my computer that I installed the drivers with the CD when I got my ASUS A7V333 Motherboard... but I haven't update it since then.. where can I find this latest drivers?

I've attached a picture of the "MODE" of my primary and secondary hard drives...

Posted by: Null Actor

Yeah, just as I thought. Assuming your harddrive is on the primary IDE channel, then it is stuck in PIO mode.

You can get the latest drivers here: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=300

Sorry, I'm a computer idiot... so the one I should download is the VIA Hyperion 4in1 v4.49( "VIAHyperion4in1v4.49.zip") file, right? and does this work with Windows 2K too?

Posted by: Outlaw

Yes, that's the one. It works for all windows versions, although an older version is recommended if you're using windows 95/98/98SE.

Posted by: Kristine

I've update to the latest 4 in 1 drivers already, and the problem still exist when I open my programs and copying files with the background music playing, that dragging sound is really annoying. Any more ideas in what else I can do?

Once again, thanks for the people who reply to my post.. I really appreciate it..^_^

Check your bios settings, and maybe try a bios update.

Are there any other drives connected to the same cable? Are you using an 80 conductor cable?

Posted by: Kristine

also... not to mention that the mouse slows down when I open a program or copying files....... >_<

Posted by: Kristine

How or where do I check my BIOS settings in my computer?

As for the cables you are talking about, I have no idea about the hardware cables inside my comp..

Posted by: Null Actor

If you don't know how to check the bios, it's best to find someone who does know who can do it for you.

Posted by: Kristine

Alright.. thanks for your input.. I guess I just have to live with it for now.... because it's my brother who set up my computer for me, and now he's not going to be back till next year's July.. so I have to wait.. I guess...

Is it best to update the driver of my BIOS? Is that a good idea? Somehow my bro told me I better not do that if the computer is able to boot up , and BIOS is very hard to fix once if I've failed of updating it... .. so I really have no idea what to do....

Ask your brother if he can walk you through checking the bios to make sure DMA is enabled.
