I want to upgrade the processor from the standard PII 233mhz to something faster. Does anyone know what my options are? I heard that the options are pretty limited but am trying to verify.

in general, youre not going to be able to upgrade from a 233 to anything meaninful. you might be able to hit 300, but thats not really very useful. the question is, do you want to just buy a new computer, or keep a few of your current devices and just buy what is needed?

i guess i am trying to squeeze a little more life out of this one without spending too much money. A new computer will have to wait until next year. What do i need to buy to hit 300 and what sort of improved speed would it give?

to improve your current, youd have to buy the max cpu your motherboard can use. you may already be at that point, but youll have to find your motherboard model and just stick it into a websearch. some links will provide you with the specs. youll have a hard time finding a p2 commercially, ebay is going to be the most likely source. if your motherboard wont go any higher, its replacement time.

thanks redwench. the motherboard number is 006727 - 102 and the label inside the cover says that the max is 66/300mhz. I have not had any luck tracking down a 300 pii so far. I will try ebay next. Does anyone know what sort of improvement a 300mhz will bring over a 233?

virtually unnoticable. its not going to be cost effective by any means, but if youre ready to throw it out the window, it might help.

I have used several evergreen processor upgrades over the years and they have come down in price since the days when you were upgrading from a 75Mhz system or even your 233Mhz to a 400Mhz because that was the High end processor at the time 3 years ago this upgrade ran over $200-$300 now it’s worth the $79 you pay for it
I did a Compaq 233Mhz last month with this same upgrade and it worked like a charm.

might be worth a shot, as long as you dont try to use modern programs.
