floppy drive not readable

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I recently got a used computer for my son. It has 128 mb ram, 2 gb hard drive. I formatted the hard drive to start fresh. Installed a fresh version of windows 98. Well the problem is the floppy doesn't read with the system. I get the error message " the specifed device cannot be read". I look into to device manger and it appears to be working properly. There are no conflicts in sytem information. I also even made windows to install a new piece of hardware. Is there anything I ammissing?

Try the following:

1.) Check the cables on your floppy drive and make sure they are secure ... if you unhooked its power connector when you installed the new hard drive, make sure it's connected the right way.

2.) Since it is a used computer, chances are the floppy drive may have not been cleaned in a long while. Get a floppy disc cleaner.

On an unrelated note, a 2GB hard drive might run out quickly for a Windows 98 system...

a sledge hammer?

you can always switch his with yours to see if its a drive problem or a board problem.

great info I wil try both...........I know the harddrive is small but a 7yr old can't do too much damage to it

can it read any floppy disks you have at all?
and check and see if the ide cable isnt in backwards..

I put a floppy in and I hear it do something, then it goes silent and I get the message "the specified device can't be read from the system" or something like that.

Perhaps it is that the A: disks are not formatted.

It could also be the brand of floppy disk you have, some companies don't manufacture them correctly and they may be defective.

Also, as stated earlier it could be that the drive isn't clean.

if the comp cant read the disk, its a different message.

What did you do to fix it?

I made sure the connection inside the computer were fastened tightly and I blew some air inside the floppy, Presto it worked
