random shut-downs...

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

hey all -
this is my first post here, so i hope it's coherent. i looked around the other posts for anything like this, but i didn't find anything.

i've been having a really bizarre problem lately. you see, my computer has developed this habit of partially shutting down at random intervals. it could be before windows even loads during start-up, or it could be after i've been using the computer for two hours. there isn't an error message, or the blue screen o' death, or anything. it just... happens. the monitor either goes blank (no signal, like) or displays a seemingly random pattern of lines and colors. the keyboard, and needless to say the mouse, do nothing. the fans stay on, and as far as i can tell, so do all the disks, but the little green power light goes off. the restart button does nothing, so i have to do a cold reboot, and occassionally the computer just starts up like this, with the power light off, everything else on, and no working interface. some of the time, the cd-rom drive makes a loud stuttering noise. i'm sure the noise is coming from the cd-rom drive because i unhooked it from the power supply and the noises stopped - but the problem itself was still there.

this has been happening more and more frequently lately. i really have no clue why. i'm relatively sure it isn't an issue of overheating - the cooling fans all work, and i even tried the trick where you open the box and run a house fan on it. my only thought is that maybe my motherboard has simply stopped working properly. but really i'm pretty mystified.

i'd appreciate any advice, thoughts, what have you. thanks!

motherboard, ram, PS, or cpu are all possibilites. but get a temp monitoring program and run that first.

sounds like somthing is overclocked and its geting too hot. check temp might need another fan

hey again -
thanks for the quick advice, but i'm afriad to say it's taken a turn for the very bad. now the computer won't even boot up. ever. i've tried like a million times, and it consistently comes up with the power light off, no signal to the monitor, and no keyboard or mouse function, while the fans and disks continue to run. every time.

needless to say, i am typing this on a different computer.

so i guess the temp check program idea isn't very viable at this point, as i can't run any programs at all...

i should also mention that over the month or so leading up to this, the computer was acting a bit strange now and again - sometimes i got the "disk boot error - insert new disk and try again" message when i started up, other times i'd get invalid page fault errors at inexplicable times (say, closing the "my computer" window). i figured the computer was just being moody, but i suppose it could've had something to do with this whole fiasco.

as best as i can ascertain, my setup is as follows:
S3 Trio64 V2/DX video card
3Dfx V2-1000 video accelerator
OPL3 Yamaha Sound Blaster 16 Compatible sound card
Asus SP97-V motherboard

i'm running windows 98, and i believe i have a pentium 233 processor and 48mb ram, but i'm not entirely sure.

any advice or help would be hugely appreciated. thank you all!!

well, this wont be helpful im afraid. given those components, just get a new computer. the entire thing would be worth $50 if it was working, which it isnt. you cant check those components in a modern comp, it wont boot, so you cant troubleshoot it. its a very pretty decorative item at this point.

okay, thanks a lot. it's not really a surprise - i kind of figured this was a long time coming anyway... damn thing's been disintegrating since i can remember.

well, i hope they still have some of those new 486's in stock.

...kidding.
