Everspring 40x12x48 Burnproof IDE CD-RW - Problems

I bought this cd-rw from ebuyer.com in August 2002, so it's approximately a year or so old. I've never had any problems with it untill about a week a go, when it stopped reading any disc I put into the drive.
I've checked to see if the IDE cable was properly plugged in [It was] and used control panel and device manager, which tells me the device is working properly, however when I put a disc into the drive I get a cd symbol next to the mouse pointer, indicating a disc being read and the light on front of the drive flashes green but never stops flashing.
I right click on the drive and use explore or open to reveal an empty window as if the contents of the drive had nothing inside.
I'm thinking about finally upgrading my system sooner or later and keeping this old one as a potential render farm for my dabbles with 3D programs, but I was curious to know whether the drive was salvageable.

use a cleaning cd first.
