Half Life 2 Source Code Leaked - Hacker Believed to be the Cause

Alarms were raised this morning as rumors that the source code for the much-anticipated game Half Life 2 had been leaked out surfaced in Half Life news sites.
Here is the skinny from Slashdot:
"There is the Half Life 2 source code floating around the net right now. It looks to be about a month old. There's no official word from Valve on the source code leak yet. Unfortunately those who want to use it to cheat already have it, we need to get the word to legitimate customers to educate them about the situation."
This was verified a short time later by HL2 Managing Director, Gabe Newell, in the HalfLife2.Net forums. Here is an excerpt from his post:
---------------------------
Here is what we know:
1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.
2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.
3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.
4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.
5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).
6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.
Well, this sucks.

No shit Gabe.
Expect further delays on the Half Life 2 release...

That f*cking sucks. I hope they can get around this.

Publicity stunt to give them a viable reason for pushing the street date even farther back.

Thats the first thing that came into my head

ayep, me too. but if it is an actual hacker, they should hire him to do their security... if he is not a git

They don't need a reason. They are rich, and no matter how long they delay it, it'll still sell a bajillion copies.

Leaking their source code to the rest of the world isn't the brightest idea for a publicity stunt either. And yes, it really did leak, it's not some kind of lie to give them their reason for delaying.

I never said it was a lie.

Well its official, its been delayed to April 2004. Isnt that just wonderful?

If we get there and it gets delayed, their gonna have to slap 'Forever' on the title

Now a beta version leaked too, does that add another 6 months?

Ok, i'll ask. Why would a leak slow game development?

It doesn't. They are using it as an excuse for something that was already planned.

call it a convenient inconvenience...

Heres a thought about it...
The hack was indeed real and the source code was stolen. But instead of them panicing over people using it to develop hacks and such as they are claiming, I think instead they are panicing over something else. Perhaps maybe some code in there that nobody else is supposed to see or know about. Code that could cause them a lot of trouble.

I don't see them panicking.
