Microsoft begins assault on the neutrality of the BIOS

Microsoft has expanded its relationship with BIOS maker Phoenix Technologies in a deal designed to more closely integrate the basic building blocks of the PC with the Windows operating system.

The relationship, announced this week, is designed to make PCs simpler and more reliable, the companies said. The move is likely to put consumer rights advocates on their guard, however, since both Microsoft and Phoenix are involved in plans to integrate digital rights management (DRM) technology at the operating system and hardware level.

I run AMI, but I am beginning to shift in my seat. Honestly though, if all major BIOSes were windows proprietary, what would we have left?

Windows in the BIOS? For the first time in a long time: Im scared.

"and more reliable"

lol

If executed right, this would actually make hardware and software much more seamless and easier to manage - if you're using Windows, that is

On the other hand, this also makes Windows exploits affect the hardware level, as well...

Dont forget the DRM stuff. Why is MS doing what they lobbied against a year or so ago. Remember that thing about banning CD Writers and other hardware like that from the consumer market? Essentially DRM does the same thing, only the hardware will still be sold and be useless.

If DRM is put into the BIOS, it basically turns your PC into a web browser. It can no longer be an entertainment center. It can only hurt MS to do that(as well as every other PC company in the industry). I bet apple would be happy about it though(or are they doing it too?).
