Uninstall McAfee Virus Scan 7.0
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have attempted to uninstall McAfee Virus Scan 7.0 so that I can install Norton Antivirus. I have tried the traditional routes: control panel, add/remove programs; forced uninstall per McAfee instructions, and a very tedius manual uninstall, without success. Can anyone suggest uninstall software and/or downloads.
Thanks.

By "manual" -do you mean you edited your registry files,and did a "search and destroy" mission looking for McAfee's leftover files in your system? Anyway- a manual registry edit may be the way.I am running version 7 in my XP Pro right now,and I've run version 4,6,and 7 on ME.I think you may have a point about the complete un-install problem,because I've heard similiar things before.I've rarely had a problem uninstalling McAfee,BUT- that could be a whole different story,if you try and switch to Norton.It could be a common problem (dunno-haven't used norton for 3 years or more).I've seen separate "dedicated" uninstallers out there on the net.I figure there's gotta be some recurring problem with this-since there's uninstallers floating around.Try searching for one.I'll let you know if I find out where,or get ahold of it.Maybe I could get a listing of the registry keys,etc. in MY Windohs! for you.(I'm running v7 right now.-on ME though-might not be the same,but...)
Also- for the future,I highly recommend a program called "Add-Remove Plus" which bypasses/front-ends your Windohs! native "Add-Remove" panel.It is much better for managing this function in 98/ME/XP! I'm not saying it will *fix* THESE types of unclean installs,but it IS much better.
I'll get back to you if I have/find more on this.

if your hard drive is formatted fat32, although thats unlikely, you can delete anything if you boot into dos. assuming youre not, find a program that will remove things from your hard drive, and registry, as suggested above. you may actually need to reinstall the pos in order to do this.
there is a commercial program, available on a 30 day trial, that will uninstall and registry clean. its worth a try. advanced administrative tools from www.glocksoft.com
if you cant get rid of it by any method, even after reinstalling, contact mcaffee for suggestions again. or just let the remnants sit there, they shouldnt cause any major problems.

Well- I just ran through BOTH registries on my ME, and XP Pro machines,running the same version 7 of McAfee,and here are some string values I found:
Millenium Registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->CLASSES->CLSID->{000209FF-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}->InProcServer32
KEY VALUE: "(Default) C:\.......\HawkScript.dll"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->CLASSES->CLSID->{2C07FEC2-CFE1-11D3-80D6-00E098008B4F}
HAS 3 SUB KEYS/STRING ENTRIES: "InProcServer32","ProgID",and "VersionIndependentProgID"
ALL WITH STRING VALUES REFERENCING "McAfee.PDAC.PalmInstaller"
XP Pro Registry:
SAME AS ABOVE! SAME KEY/SUB-KEY NAMES AND STRING VALUES.
If you are going to do a manual Registry key/string delete,then this is an idea of the id's/keys+strings you'll be looking for (probly not the exact same on yer XP registry,but you get the idea).BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST using "RegEdit"!!! Export it to your hard drive somewhere safe(preferably on another drive or partition than C: !!) Be careful! Do not try this if you are uncomfortable with it!! Things can go very wrong if you delete the wrong "keys/strings" !!! THERE- I've made my disclaimer warning.
So just find "RegEdit.exe" in C:\Windows,and run it.Then go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" in the pane on the left,expand the tree/branch.Then find "SOFTWARE".Left-click on "SOFTWARE" to select/highlight it.Right-click on it,and choose "Find",then type in "mcafee",and it will find the *first* entry.It will be similiar to the examples above (maybe exact).Delete the key.Repeat the "Find" process from that spot.It will find the next one,(as above),and so on...
Bear in mind that it's possible there are *OTHER* key entries in other places/locations in the Registry,so to be thorough after deleting the "LOCAL_MACHINE...SOFTWARE" entries,go to the very top and do a "Find" search again,to see if any more are there,in other Main Subsection Headers ! If ya find 'em -nail 'em.Just be careful--try an make sure it's *McAfee Virus Scan-related" !!!
Yeah-it's tedious all right! I had to manually edit/delete a "Visual Basic" Script Virus from the Registry a few years back!!
Also- I found that there is actually a "McAfee" retail Un-installer out there (v6.01,and 6.5, I saw),-so there must be some difficulties with this issue,I figure. Maybe try one of them FIRST...

ok so after a huge hastle i figured out how to uninstall mcafee. So here is how everyone. Go to the start menu and click "run". Type "msconfig" and hit enter. Click the "services" tab. Uncheck all 3 mcafee services and click apply then ok. close msconfig and go to the start menu/control panel/add or remove programs. Scroll down and select the second mcafee logo. I forgot the title but its the one without the red and white "M" logo. This one must be uninstalled first. Click the "change/remove" tab and after uninstalling it will ask you to restart click yes. do the same thing with the program with the red logo and restart again. Now that those are gone right click on the start menu and click "explore". On the left side go to "program files" folder under "c:". In the under this folder there shoulkd be a file called mcafee.com. Right click it and click "delete". Then go to the recycle bin and empty it. done.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have trouble uninstalling McAfee. I have 7.0 and followed all the instructions on their website but am still left with two files that refuse to be uninstalled. I tried it their way and also unsing the search. Both ways gave me the message that my access was denied to that file: I could not uninstall them. The file names are AVConsol.mmf and NAkml32.dll. Anybody know how to get rid of them or should I just ignore them if they won't cause any problem?
