regEdit - DISASTER learning the hard way

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

how do i say "opps" and get you to feel sorry for me, enough so those of you that have experience in this area can help me out...(i've done simple edits in regedit for the past two years...this is my first disaster) - but i've recovered from many other problems the past several years, so i'm already excited about what i'll learn out of all of this!!

here's what i did, what happened, and what i've learned so far: pc is WINXP PRO
- the edit i made in the registry was in the explorer.exe shell, ( my vain attempt to make the windows 'start' button say something different...following a tweak from the eldergeek site...more involved than just a value change, (www.theeldergeek.com/ change_text_on_xp_start_button.htm )

upon restart the box boots to the logon screen, takes my psswd, then apparently just hangs, as my only my wallpaper comes up...my LanGuard network scanner reveals that no one is loged into the pc -0- i can browse to the c drive of the problem pc from a win2k box (both are in the same workgroup) but ofcourse, i can't get into WINNT or program files (at least i can recover my documents!)

- i can put the reg backup file i made on a floppy, but how do a replace that key from a command prompt, is it even possible?
( i don't think i saved the registry properly, i didn't realize that you have to select "aLL", rather than 'selected branch" to get a full backup copy...i'm not even sure what was selected when i did that registry export
- i'm able to 'see' the computer in 'computer managagement' from the win2k box but am not allowed to do much there

- i can connect with regedt32, again, from the networked computer, but not able to perform any edits/ or even view more than the control sets

so while i'm learning about being better prepaired/informed when playing around in the registry ( next time will have an ERD ,etc..)- your seated there saying "re-install geek wanna-be"... or perhaps there's a slick solution(s).....
thanks in advanced for any suggestion/insights/encouragement.
