Something There Is That Doesn't Love A Cub's Fan

(Things to think about while I go off and find gruesome details on the hapless and in hiding Cubbies fan whom enraged fanatics say lost game 6 for them)

Disclaimer: I am a St. Looey Cardinals Fan and have been since birth. Cubs fans should know what that means.

For some time now I have had a tenuous link to reality. OTS notwithstanding. Part of it being age, part being 60's psychedelic flashbacks, and part being current medications. Reality just doesn't seem real to me anymore. Another way of saying that is that the Emperor has no clothes. One (at least me) looks for familiar things around him when things start looking strange out. I mean really STRANGE!!!!

Like All these incredible but unbelievable things happening against all odds and circumstance. Things like another Bush in the White House, Going to War in the Mid-East over oil AGAIN!~, Bazillion dollar deficit AGAIN!~, the EPA, FCC, USDA, & (your choice) going to the industries they regulate for new directors., 9/11, Ashcroft as Attorney General, Homeland Security, Airport Security, Rush Limbaugh the Junkie, Ozzie with his own TV show, A republican governor of Georgia, Conan the Barbarian as governor of California (rumored to be a republican as well).

When people my age start seeing things like that we go on a desperate search for the familiar. This could be anything from Historical Re-enactments of bygone wars, eras, or fancy, Pie socials at church, PTA chili suppers, buying a bass boat, a banjo or a wood stove. All this from a mistaken notion that whatever worked for mother and dad and grandmother and granddad will work for us. You can’t go back. Everyone knows that. Some things never change and that list is dwindling.

The most familiar thing in my neck of the wood are the hard luck Cubbies. Hapless. Forlorn. Goat cursed. Every now and then they will rise from the cellar and make a run for the big one -- the world series. And every now and then they will make it ever so close…so close All of Chicago is holding its breath and just when they let down their guard and start believing -- THE CUBS LOSE AGAIN.

(My recommendation by the way is the erection of a wire fence that keeps fans away from the edge of the bleachers in the outfield so they can’t interfere with players on the field attempting to catch a fly ball. My sweetie liked my other idea better -- that of sacrificing a goat before each game to the Gods of Chance. Haven‘t ever had a mutton sandwich in that stadium now that I think about it.)

Well the Cubs lost again this year and that made me feel better. Because we expect the Cubs to lose the big one. It is familiar. And right now a lot of us need familiar because everything else is so STRANGE. If they had won this year -- I would have been hard pressed to find something that won’t ever change…no wait…I plumb forgot about cynical non-voters, politicians, lobbyists, multi-national corporations, wars in the national interest, and wall street.

Death and taxes.

well, i guess you can lunatics that will do anything for religion or money.

I dont see why everyone is on that guy for trying to catch that ball. It had absolutely nothing to do with the cubs losing. When your up 3 games to 1, and lose the series still, the team blew it, plain and simple.

Cutting off the fans from the game is not something that should be done.

Don't forget about Boston labo...

aye, as a new england sports fan (pats, sox, bruins, celtics) i identify with the teams partly because they are so hard-luck. true, i'd like to see each and every one of my teams win the Big One at least once during my time, but if they were to up and become powerhouse sports teams i don't know how i'd feel about that. it's fun to root for the little guy, especially when you know goliath is gonna squarsh him.

yankee fatalism maybe...

Being a Columbia native I'm surprised you didn't mention MU beating our arch-nemesis Nebraska. Talk about things that are "incredible but unbelieveable".

it was gonna rain... Nebraska never wins against Mizzou in the rain. Nebraska played strictly power ball -- run it at you or around you or over you. Nebraska has shown itself to be vulnerable with just a running game.

One thing new is the Nebraska quarterback pacing the inside running game with short outside passes to keep the linebackers to the outside.

Slick astroturf and wet balls for Nebraska made Mizzou a good pick for some quick cash and rain does change the odds enough to tempt the sentimental bettors.

I wasn't one of them since I only seem to get sentimental when I have had a few beers and I haven't had a beer since college.
