Have new notebook that was initially fast. Within a day of loading software xp pro is now very slow. There is a pause before any programs load and load is slower.
Considering rolling back to 2000. Any ideas?
Thanks, Garry

pull up the task list and see whats on there. youve probably got a hog running. could be a windows program or something else. going back to 2k isnt going to help if its not windows causing the slowdown.

No hog. 99% idle. indexing turned off. 2.8GHz hyperthreading, 512 RAM yet its a dog.

how much of that ram is free?

did you defrag the hard drive? that can make noticable difference.

I think redwench hit the point of today home with the RAM. Given that you were loading software the day before the sys decided to slow, you probably have all kinds of "helper" services runing on your computer. These services run the core of your programs all the time so that the programs launch faster by only loading the GUI. Consequently, this uses a lot of ram even though you are not doing anything.
Fortuneatly, this is very easy to solve. Click start, then run and type "msconfig" without the quotation marks. Click the startup tab and uncheck everything whose start folder does not reside in the WINDOWS directory. Click okay, and then click restart now. When the system boots again, check the box that says something similar to "never show this windows again", click okay, and your computer should be much faster.

Thanks Arturo238
but I had done that. There is considerable pause in the system when programs load. There is no immediate HD activity as you would expect. XP Pro seems to be doing something in the background but I can't locate what it is up to.

Do you have all the latest security patches installed? You may also want to run an anti-virus program. There are some viruses that can take system resorces without showing the effects in the performance monitor.

Un-install SP1.
SP1 slows the loading of programs and the startup of the system 10x. Theres supposed to be a fix somewhere on the MS website, but It's not a "Recommended" fix, or something like that.
EDIT: I should point out that it doesn't slow down every system, just some. It is a possibility though, and you should look into it.

you can safely uninstall sp1 if its not connected to the net but as mentioned, ms did patch that problem.

Thanks for the SP1 tip. I rolled back 15 updates but to no avail. XP Pro slo. I've seen this before. Most go back to Win 2000 out of frustration.

thats because they dont turn off the "optional" features that xp hides. xp will have no trouble using most of your 512 ram if you let it. you also could have spyware, virii, or auxillary programs running. there are some nice monitoring programs that will let you view your ram or cpu usage.
this is rather unlikely, but make sure your bios is setup properly, and all your ram is being detected.

Thanks
Yes running SpyBot and FreeRAM. I guess I had best start turning off XP Pro auto features.

Unfortunately without SP-1 you cannot install the latest security updates, so you should be careful (at least have TCP port filtering on).
However, running a software firewall like Agnitum Outpost has kept me rather safe (at least it seems that way because I've never gotten the worm), so no SP-1 + firewall may be better than SP-1 with or without firewall.
*contemplates uninstalling SP-1*

Have rolled back SP1 and have router firewall plus Zonealarms which picks up a lot of pings that get through the router.
Still get a significant pause in hard drive activity after starting a program eg IE. Once things start it's now not too bad but something is going on.
Thanks
