Diablo II not playing

My computer has played D2 for over a year without any problems, but a new hard drive was recently installed. The game seems to run fine until I download the v1.09 patch (I only play online).
Whenever I load Diablo II.exe from any location on my computer I just get a black, low-resolution screen which I have to quit to return to desktop.
Can anyone help please?
