install xp pro on old machine

Hi, I have a win 98
450 cpu
378 mb RAM
p3
will it be ok to install win xp pro on this?

Thanks

Your computer will be able to run windows XP pro but it will be increadibly slow. You will be best served running 98 on that computer and buying a new computer for XP.

Your computer meets the minimum system requirements, but I would not install XP on that machine. You would probably experience a loss in performance compared to your current OS with old hardware such as what you have.

If you shut off all the visual effects and grab some more ram I think it would run ok. Either that or windows 2000. Just DONT get WinME...whatever you do.

Back when I had my old mammoth machine, I ran Windows XP Professional on:

Pentium III 450
192mb RAM

It worked great for me. =)

I have a HP Pavillion with a 400 Celeron and 384 mb of ram running XP.
As stated above it does slow down the comp a bit but having a much more stable system more than made up for it. As whifflebat said, though definitely shut down the bells and whistles to help performance.

Yeah, that's a bit on the slow side. I would recommend a 700 Mhz P3 with at least 256 megs of RAM. That would make your experiance a much happier one.

You could easily run Windows Millenium editition on that machine.

Even that is realy the minimum for XP 1ghz+ w/256+ memory is the sweetspot for XP users

Depends on what you run, really. Also, the number of fancy screen effects you run will make a huge difference in your everyday performance.

True. Some of us just can't reach the ideal I guess. I keep hoping this thing will crap out on me one day and give me an excuse to move up in the world.

AMD cpus are pretty cheap right now... like sub 100 bucks. Plus a nice mobo and you're set. That comes to less than 200 now..

running xp with 256 of ram is about as fast as molasses in winter. 512 is the least you can run normal programs on.

NO!!! BAD!!! EVIL!!!

WinME was the biggest disaster microsoft ever put out. It came on our old dell, and as soon as I figured it out, I put 98SE on it, then XP came out. They tried to implement some new ideas etc and different ways of coding and ended up with an OS that eats memory, crashes and is just plain crappy all around.

It should run just fine. Any os will be slow on that machine. Teh benefits XP presents are worth running it, even if it takes and additional second to run.

I'll bet xp runs faster than what you have now ! It's worth it !
