(things you can think about while I see if Joan Baez or Laura Nyro are still playing in the Village)

This fall sure does seem like the sixties for a lot of reasons, none of them good. I can say that because I was there in the sixties and some say I am still here in the “aughts”. The similarities are causing me to dust out my Nehru jackets and Pachooli oil. I am relearning the lyrics to Eve of Destruction and Feel Like I’m Fixing to Die Rag just to be cool when I sing at the local coffee house.

What similarities you ask?
American troops getting killed daily in some foreign country we have no reason to be in. Daily demonstrations by the peace activists all over the country. (Honk, if you want our troops out of Iraq!!) Administration denials that stiff resistance to occupation means a failed foreign policy. Famous people getting busted for drug use. Liberals and Conservatives complaining about the cost of war vs. the cost of reconstructing a domestic economy in shambles.

One thing that is new is that hip hop music for the first time held all top ten slots in the billboard rankings. I can envision the Grammys this year, all the artists up for an award coming up and grabbing their crotch or bending over to reveal an already revealing plastic wrapped cleave-awge, raising their fist, and yelling, “’Sup! Mofos!”

Another thing new is that dudes who do soundtracks to computer games want their own category. I see this as a good thing. While there are some inventive tunes out there to our favorite games. Addictive even. We should realize that most of the stuff is loops, samples, and cut and paste 16 bit midi strings that are a far cry from the big boys (composers) doing full length movies. But what the hey, you got to start somewhere.

Another thing new is that the Arctic is melting. Which makes me want to surf to see if it was the Wicked Witch of the North or the East in Wizard of Oz that melted. In any event whole glaciers are being cubed for sodas as we speak. Falling into the sea and make them rise. This goes for the AnArctic as well. Those penguins best be getting some sun blocker. Rising ocean levels could restructure our continents in ways not seen since we were all on the same piece of real estate.

This could be a good thing since certain cities and regions that are not my faves are very vulnerable to rises in ocean levels. The Weather Channel says that since the Arctic is melting, there is less ice to reflect the sun so it will get even warmer. This is good news for the MidWest since we always shiver in the winter time from cold Arctic Blasts. Not anymore. We are going to be like California weather wise while California becomes like Mexico.

I am going to Circuit City this week to buy a Dell. Dell has finally made the computer comparable to the Bic Pen. You can buy one, use it till the ink runs out on the printer that comes with it, then give it to your kids and buy another one. Did I mention that the previous Dell Spokesperson got famous and was busted for Drug Use? Dude.

All week, long distance companys have been calling me up looking for me to switch to them for long distance. For the first time, I can tell them, I don’t use long distance any more, I have a computer and a Cell Phone with lots of minutes. A small victory but sweet and savory.
I am still hoping for alternative fuel vehicles to fend off my gas credit card lenders but that is a way off.

I am also searching the net for an affordable green solar home. Possibly one of those homes that are mostly underground with lots of glazed glass and PV panels on top where you can grow your veggies and pot-atoes (cough cough) in hydroponic troughs. I want to build something that will use no electricity for heat, cooling, lighting or cooking and maybe even force the utility company to give me some money each month as I sell my surplus back to the grid.

So far it looks like it will cost me in the ballpark of $250,000 (not including land or foundation) to do that but it’s a small cost to pay if you can soak it to the utility company. I guess you could say I have been globally warming to the idea.

Eve of Destruction is a great song. I learned that one in high school. Got it on vinyl somewhere (hand-me-down from dad), but I no longer have a record player.
