Windows 98 Problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a computer that runs Windows 98. Out of the blue yesterday, every program (ie: AOL instant messanger, Internet Explorer) that I opened would give me an error message saying that it had performed an illegal operation and would be shut down. So i shut down the computer.. and then it wouldnt restart for me... In fact all it does is: A screen comes up as normal that says: Hewlett Packard Expanding Possibilities. Next the Windows 98 screen comes up and it sits there.. then after quite a while it will say "not ready reading drive C. abort retry fail. I tried all three. What do i do???

See if you can boot your system into Safe Mode and run ScanDisk.
To reach Safe Mode turn your computer on and hold down the CTRL Key until a DOS screen comes up from there select Safe Mode to start.

I thought it was F8?

Posted by: webgator40

Either ,Or , Both at same time depends on who is hitting the keys ,and Win 95 was CTRL and Tap the F-8 Key.

well, i have a little bit of computer savvy... and on mine it happens to be control that i hold down.. and i hit safe mode and she wouldnt start in safe mode either.. still froze
oh and i tried going through DOS mode and going to the registry and restoring a backup.. which also didnt work.. double boo.

Okie doke,Maybe you could try Scanreg /Fix from the command prompt.

Posted by: krazejessa

alrighty i am giving it a shot right now.. it says that it is repairing C:\windows\system.dat
thats a good sign, yes?

and these damn ghosts are fun but they are getting a tad annoying...

Posted by: webgator40

forgot to add sometimes Scanreg /restore fails because the registry is in sad shape so maybe the /fix switch will work.
Good luck

Posted by: krazejessa

i ran it, it did its thing and then said that it had successfully fixed the registry....
and then brought me back to a command prompt, at which point i typed win and it took forever, then said Not ready reading drive C Aborth retry fail?

and to clarify what i said earlier, i could make it sucessfully restore, and then it would go through the motions of starting up... and then it would stop at the Windows 98 pretty blue cloud screen

this is frustrating, im about to throw my computer out the window and go drink. its halloween.

Go to www.bootdisk.com and make a boot disk for 98 se

Posted by: krazejessa

what does that do?
i mean ... yeah the name is obvious

Posted by: webgator40

The disk should load Windows.
And if it does you could scandisk from windows.
Just trying to help.

Posted by: krazejessa

thanks im gonna give that a try but its definately time for me to stop with the computer for the night and go out. so thank you so much.. i might bug you again some other time.

I was listed as a newcomer.. now all of a sudden im a
COOL NEWCOMER
whats that mean??

Posted by: webgator40

After so many posts you become cool, kinda like a rank I guess.
Hope you get up and running.
Good Luck

when you get the boot disk and get to the A: command prompt after booting with the disk, try fdisk/mbr to repair the master boot record. If that doesn't work, you may have to try to go to the HD manufacturer's web site and download a tool for DOS that will check your HD and see if it's bad. If your HD is not bad, you may have to reformat/reinstall.

i burned a boot disk for my win 98.... now when i turn on my computer do i just drop it in the cdrom drive and pray something happens?

Posted by: Whifflebat

IT should work as long as your bios is setup to boot from the cdrom, which you may have to setup.

Posted by: krazejessa

which is done approximately how? lol

Posted by: krazejessa

heres what happened.. i put in the cd, it starts doing its thing like it wants to start up.. and then it goes

Not ready reading drive C:
Abort, Retry, Fail?
