Microsoft and other companies are now requiring activation of software. Does anyone know how this will affect actions like using Norton Ghost to back up hard drives?

Ghost will work fine. In fact, it is a good idea to make a drive image after activation of windows, so that when you re-install the OS you dont have to re-activate or tell windows not to run every memory consuming application MS ever made. Just backup normally and you won't have any trouble. Just remember that it is a complete backup, meaning if the prodcut was not yet activiated before the backup, then it will not be activated when a HD is restored. However, you can inform MS that you had to revert your computer, and they will issue you a new installation ID so that you may continue use of your software.
