pc problems..virus??

Hi I have a pc which has pentium2, windows ME (unfortunately).The internet connection was fine until 6 days ago, when I tried to connect it would not do that, and came up with another page with this message
Microsoft Windows system % error%
00000000x01 4E 00A2 2934 F2 12 DB00 C3
Console %winlog32.exe% lost connection or blocked by firewall
I do not have a firewall enabled, so this does not make sense. Fortunately I have internet connection on another pc.
I have no idea why this has happened, am unable to run the norton virus scan which is on the pc
If this is a virus, any suggestions for a program to either remove or detect? But I would need to download the program onto disk from the pc I am using at the moment and then load onto the pc which wont work.
Any suggestions at all would be much appreciated.

Hooray...I have a connection!!
Cheers for that..ran the program a couple of times, is as good as new..thanks ever so much for the info.
Can anyone reccomend an anti virus program to download to prevent this happening again?
