autochk program not found

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Using Windows XP Pro
AMD Athlon
Epox RD8+

When it begins, I get the error message "autochk program not found - skipping AUTOCHECK"
It stays there for good three minutes and then reboots itself.
Then I get to choose Safe Mode from the restart.

Then I get a long list of codes when I choose Safe Mode:

Quote:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windowssystems32

I am on Safe Mode as of now on my other pc. What could be the problem and any idea how to fix it?

The autochk bug in winXP comes from trying to boot XP from a primary partition that is not currently active (IE, its "hidden NTFS"). This would usually come from having another OS installed, but also possibly from simply doing a bad job with your partitioning scheme. Either get your hands on a copy of the Partition Magic Boot Disks, or if you are comfortable with fdisk, use that. Set your XP partition to active, and you'll be set.

Fibbi is right. If the computer is rebooting then most likely the NTFS partition has been configured as a "hidden NTFS" parition, which is 0x17 (hex) or 23 (decimal) in the "partition type" field of the partition table. XP seens to treat this in the following manner: if the partition is "hidden", then it should pretend that the partition does not exist. If the partition does not exist, then the pathname of the autochk.exe file is inaccessible. You can download a free tool called "PTEDIT" (do a Google search with "PTEdit download") which runs from a DOS boot disk and will allow you to simulate the situation, so that you can see the results. For your system partition, type "17" (which is hexadecimal) or select from the list options "hidden NTFS" and it will automatically select the numerical value for you. Tell it to save the changes, and you will get exactly the results you described. This is most common for people running dual-boot systems under Linux.

However, if your computer is not auto-rebooting after displaying that message, it is most likely caused by a Microsoft XP Hotfix which is supposed to correct a security leak regarding UDP and TCP/IP ports. This hotfix is probably not applicable to most people, and apparently only manifests itself in certain hardware environments, presumably regarding specific BIOS issues within the network card. To solve this problem, go to "Add/Remove Programs" in the Control Panel and remove Windows XP KB824105.

Gotta love those hotfixes!

Take Care
