XP + Network = TROUBLES!

Hi all,
I am having the worst troubles I am having here. I have a small network; with 2000 and XP machines. They are all connected into the same hub. We also have a 2000 advanced server. The XP clients cannot resolve DNS names (one of them can for some reason); but can ping each other (except one; that can surf the net, but cannot ping anyone else at all). They also are unable to join the domain. They all have the same network card with the same driver and settings. They are all a part of the same workgroup as well. The 2000 clients are fine; they can ping eachother and join the domain. I have no clue what is going on. I am probably just missing something small. Any help would be appriciated, and if you need more information please ask.

If you're not using DHCP, then you would have to be more specific with your subnet/mask/gateway information. If they are all configured the same, simply say so.

And make sure they point to the correct DNS server. Of course, you don't have to do this if you DO have DHCP.

yes; they are using DHCP. The DHCP server is actually on a Linksys router. We have a DSL connection into the building; so the Router is providing my internal IP address (DHCP) and NAT. The DNS servers are provided by our DSL carrier. One more thing to add. One of the XP machines is unable to ping anyone else in the building; but is able to surf the net with no troubles. I'm stumped!

Check and see if the firewall and smart card authentication are enabled in the network properties on the XP machines. Those things will usually allow you to ping other machines, but won't always let the comp appear on the network for file and printer sharing. Your situation is a bit different than the even smaller and simpler networks I work on, so this is just a shot in the dark. The one XP that can surf, but not ping others, doesn't seem to fit that mold.

Can the other XP clients succesfully ping out to the DNS IP's?

yes they can. Everyone can surf the net. All the time. This has got me so baffled.. Whats happening doesn't even make sense. I checked the settings you mentioned and they were ok.
