email question

I'm not sure if this fits with Web Development, so feel free to move it....
If I use a free email service like hotmail or yahoo, is there any way the recipient of the email can figure out who sent it? All the information in the personal profile is false, and writing style is not an issue. Can they get my IP address or anything else important?

Not directly. But, be warned. If you do anything illegal from one of those anonymous email addresses, the FBI or any other law enforcement agency can track you down. They have very close ties to those websites.

I have never used Hotmail, but I know with Yahoo! you can change the name displayed with outgoing mail.
After you sign into your Yahoo! account do the following:
Options>Mail Preferences>From Name

As far as I know, all the information can be seen in the email headers and footers, so if the recipient is decently knowledgeable about emailing (and if he has a fairly good email program), he or she can see the IP address of who sent the email, as well as the pertinent DNS information...
This information can be used to track down the user who sent the email, unless the user spoofs his IP or used a proxy to send the email on Hotmail. Same thing works for any free email service, as a security measure against amateur spammers...

There are a few services online that will let you send an anonymous email, those might work. I don't know of any off the top of my head.
