motherboard max RAM help

i am wondering if anything, bad or good, happens if you use a speed of RAM higher than the suggested max speed. Like in a 400MHz max motherboard, what would happen if i used 433MHz. Thanks

It's called overclocking. Your RAM might not even be able to reach that speed, and if it does it might spout out errors crashing programs left and right.
If you're running a P4 system, I don't think you'd notice a difference. When it comes to overclocking the P4 responds better to FSB rather than RAM speed.
So unless you want to overclock just for the fun of it (like me), I don't think it would be worth it.

well, i am using AMD, XP 3000+, and the price of PC3200 and PC3500 are $5 dollars different. So if i do get the 3500 will it probably work at the same speed as the 3200?

Yes. I don't think he read your question. It's not about overclocking.
You can use faster RAM that what you're running or what the motherboard specifies as the minimum speed.

I don't recall any motherboards that support more than 400mhz FSB or memory speed officially. Running 433 RAM is called overclocking.

Really?
He wants to know if he can run 433Mhz RAM at 400Mhz speed. Yes, he can.

Guess I'm missing the point here.
If you're going to only run them at 400MHz then I'd get the more reliable brand of the two (if they're different).

thank you both taco_fox and Kdr Kane
i just wanted to make sure if i went above nothing would happen. i can't find a 433Mhz supported motherboard either. So i will probably get the 433 and if it only runs at 400 oh well. And also do i need anything special to get it to run closert to 433 or can i just increase the voltage or something. thanks in advance
