From Gamespot
"Nintendo also revealed today that it plans to unveil its next-generation console at E3 in May next year. Nintendo's executive director Jinyou Mori stated that the company hopes to release the unannounced next-generation console during the next fiscal year in Japan, and also commented that a simultaneous worldwide release would be ideal."

I could see it hitting japan next year, but announcing it at E3 and releasing it worldwide next year too, it seems like that will be hard to do. We have known about the development of PS3 for over 2 years now, and more recently another MS console in the past few weeks. Theres been no word about the next Nintendo console at all until now, except that they had one in development. Unless their planning to saturate every TV, Magazine and Website with advertisements for this thing in a short amount of time, it could go unoticed. I personally think the Gamecube has a good year and a half left, possibly more. Ive barely had mine for a year yet.

Nintendo should not have said ANYTHING about this until very close to E3, as Sony wasnt planning on showing anything PS3 related at the next E3 except possibly minor stuff(even though theres a running PS3 demo system going around showing closed demos). Now that they know Nintendo is planning to steal the show with a new system, they have more than enough time to prepare a PS3 demo. Either way though, Nintendo will be the first one to bring out a new system.

There truly are no long any secrets in the gaming industry, except when Duke Nukem Forever is going to be released.

...or when Half Life 2 will actually come out.

It's not surprising really, nintendo needs to counter sony or they are going to lose the market. I really expect that Microsofts going to pull something for the XBox, but we will ahve to wait and see.

That's more of a topic for a philosophy dissertation at this point.

My faith in a Nintendo made console is all but gone. I cant really see how coming out early will help them.

If the system is coming out as soon as they say- that pretty much says "**** you" to all the gamecube owners. Nintendo is probably focusing all their game making efforts (metroid, mario, zelda) on the new system.

Nintendo is dumb.

I'd bet money it's a GC with DVD capabilities, which will be released by nintendo everywhere. Not a new console.

....which still amounts to Nintendo pissing on current Gamecube owners.

They don't do that already?

But the Nintendo person reffered to it as "next-generation console".

If they do come out with a new one that early, it better be backward compatable with all current GC games. Thats the ONLY way I would even consider buying one(even though my GC game collection isnt that big).

So what the hell is it? Or are they trying to mask it?

Maybe they mean "finally equal with the current crop of 'next gen' consoles".

I'm pretty sure that the fact that it can't play DVDs is hurting it on some level. Or at least, it did at first. It might not be so true nowadays for people who own one of the current consoles. But as far as market viability goes, more features is usually directly linked to more sales.
