Toshiba Satellite M20-S257 speakers don't work

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I have a Toshiba Satellite M20-S257 running XP Pro.
When I am playing an mp3, and it is routed out to desktop speakers using a connection from the headset output, it plays fine.
WHen I disconnect this connection, the laptop speakers play nothing.
This used to not happen, and the laptop speakers used to play fine.

What are the chances this problem is software vs a dysfunctional laptop speakers? Thanks!

If you can play through the headphone socket, but not the internal speakers, make sure that you have the speakers enabled. In control panel - sounds and audio devices - volume - speaker settings - advanced - speaker setup, make sure that you have 'laptop stereo speakers' enabled.

Otherwise, depending on the socket itself, there should be a mechanical bypass that cuts the internal speakers off, when headphones are used. This may be stuck in the 'plug inserted' mode, so that the laptop thinks the headphones are still connected.

Hope this helps.
