Three gorges
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: TheeMon
hmmm in china they are building a dam called three gorges if any1 watches the discovery channel theyd know... its quite an old prog (theyve run it alota times) but i was just thinking if any1 ever went to war w/ china a MAJOR way to sqrew china over would be ta bomb the dam... i mean bam they lose the multi millions they put in it plus itd creat a tital wave and take out everything below it includeing that major city that hey just said that starts w/ a S or maybey a C either way that sounds like a good attack plan eh? hehe
Posted by: Canis Lupus
Uhm, right...
Why bomb the dam when you can just bomb the capital... I am sure that's what China's gonna do in retaliation... not such a good attack plan, eh?
Besides, the US has more dams than China, and for sure they (China) have enough missiles to launch at each of them, so I guess the best way is to try to keep the peace...
Posted by: Gerbilo
china has about 20 nuclear ballistic missiles from last reports, also, they are aimed at our fleets
Posted by: Lord_Buttplug
Probably more than 20. They might have some aimed at the fleets in the Pacific, but they would be tac nukes and not ballistic missiles.
Posted by: Spider
uh . . . is it a god dam?
Posted by: Spider
Sorry, tasteless humor. Couldn't resist.
Posted by: Canis Lupus
actually, it would have been worse if you said "dam-sum" ... okay, little more tasteless, but you started it!

lol
I'm going to sleep.

How about a gorges DAMsel in distress?
Posted by: JANNA
ya ive seen that show i thought it was hilarious with the narrator going on about how the chinese were concerned over the damn paying for itself. wtf?!?!?!! china is a communist country they have no real economy the govt owns everything including the houses people live in and the people themselves. Russia lasted as long as it did out of sheer inertia they didnt have a real economy to generate wealth either. sooner or later china's govt will go the way of russia but it will take just a bit longer due to the sheer size of the country and the fact that the majority of the people in china are not affected by their govt. how can a dam pay for itself when there is no economy to generate wealth.
but anyway with the way communist countries build things i doubt it will take all that long before the whole thing comes tumbling down without the added "help" of a bomb or 3.
Posted by: Gerbilo
LBP, yeah, exactly. Maybe i was thiking of Indias Nuke count. Oh well, North korea will have something that can get here too soon ...
Posted by: TheeMon
it even said so its self that if the dam woud ever colapse it would kill millions of ppl and cause billions upon billions in dmg plus this dam is as long as the golden gate bridge and twice as high...
the rezaphore (the water behind the dam) will be bigger then the grand canyon it is one of the biggest dam's ifnot the biggest anyways it just seemed like a good idea P
Posted by: AK47
India's nukes ?! lol Are they filled with curry?
sorry- couldnt resist. India is the filthiest damn country in the world. Its amusing to think that they have over 1 billion people- most bathing in the sewer that is the ganjes(sp) river, and they are concerned about nukes. Why dont you start by cleaning up the shithole that is your country, then worry about weapons of mass destruction. hell, I bet the smell in a crowded indian restaurant could qualify as a biological weapon.

I doubt that planning the destruction of another country is a good idea ... sometimes you can be really tactless, boy... you can look up "tactless" in the dictionary, if you want...

damn man, take it easy on thee. he doesnt deserve all the shit being thrown at him
Posted by: Canis Lupus
AK, you're missing the point... ANYONE who thinks that planning the death of millions of people and billions of dollars in collateral damage is a good idea is not okay in my book.
Frankly, your own views about India are not far behind. I'm not surprised you're defending TheeMon, since you both think the same about other countries.
I don't particularly hate TheeMon, I'm just disgusted at his ideas in this thread. Anyone else who said what he said would have merited the same reaction from me.
Anyway, moving this to the "appropriate" forum...

Okay, after a bit of thinking, I decided I may have woken up on the wrong side of the bed or something...
My apologies to TheeMon if I was a little too harsh ... stress on the job can do that to ya
Next time though, remember that Americans are not the only ones who view these forums... We got some Chinese visitors too, so they may find your views a little offensive, even though it was meant as a joke...
That goes to everyone who says something detrimental about another country. You should not be surprised if there is a backlash....

Everytime I slept with a woman, she made me sleep on the couch.
At least with a couch there is only one side you can really wake up on. That is why I prefer couches to beds. To women too, now that I think about it.
But I Digress...
This whole thread is a Rant disguised as an observation. I agree with Laggy that publicly debating ways a country might be devastated by another country is in poor taste. I have been told I am an authority on poor taste. I hate to think that the UGLY AMERICAN is that prevalent online now. Our parochial sense of self grandizement as 'mericans does nothing to advance the ideal -- that of a world community where we all get along. Nationalism has its place but only on holidays.
To be fair, I must say that currently I am advancing Anti-Country sentiments, i.e. poking fun on the Canada Kicks Butt thread on the TG forum. There is a big difference between suggesting the French call Great Britan, "En Gland" and Dam goes Boom and lots of Commies are killed. We often overlook as 'mericans that cultures like the Chinese and Indians are civilizations that span 1000's of years. I for one would prefer to learn how they lasted that long, even longer than Rome, than bragging we could kick their butt if we wanted to. I think we would be in deep do do if we did go to war with them. The amount of nukes it would take to kill off their army would be enough to destroy the world. Anyone who says differently is just weenie shaking.
The only part of this thread that was encouraging was Theemon admitting to watching Discovery Channel. Now if we just had a Spelling Channel. (An observation: I actually believe that Theemon goes out of his way to misspell stuff. It lends a certain type of Charisma to his posts. My online therapy group says it is probably parental anger displacement for them having forced Theemon to go thru Hukked on Fonics.)
Posted by: redwench
yes, i too was quite pleasantly surprised to read that thee watched the discovery channel. now if we can just get him to watch pbs, all might not be lost. a lot of novas (the pbs series, not our nova) are very interesting.
and labby, what do you do to get kicked to the couch?

Don't apologize, Laggy.

*sigh* The US knows what the Chinese are making them for...and we know what the are going to do with them. I just don't understand people...
Posted by: Freak
Argh
There are so many misunderstandings and mistakes in this thread I'm not even going to start.
Basically it's the equivalent of playing ~playsound americans.wav. But this time there is actually a point there. 19th century was a British century, 20th century is a American century but there is no doubt the 21th century will belong to China. Arrogant\Ignorant Americans better start learning the REAL facts instead of stereotypes and misguided rumors from the american media.
And BTW about the Three Gorges Dam. In the unlikely event that it does collapse. There will also be blame on the Americans. The whole dam uses Caterpillar equipment, which is from an American company. No doubt the 2 countries will ***** and moan at each other.
I understand this is a joke thread, but some people have short fuses.
And oh BTW, the Chinese economy is almost bigger than the Americans. The argument of "they have no real economy" is bullshit. Alot of the companies are government owned agreed, and they are managed poorly. But there is a growing sector of private companies and with such a huge market they make shitloads of money.
The chinese government (at least the leftist groups, wait that's the radicals right) knows communism doesnt work, Mao was mad and all the other Communist peeps are nuts. They now accept private capitalists members into the Communist party.
oh **** it, i'll shut up now.

"Current estimates assert that only about 20 ICBMs are in service"
LBP.... oh well
Posted by: Lord_Buttplug
You believe your sources and I'll believe mine.
Posted by: Kdr Kane
LBP,
I got's to agree with you. If you read the whole article, they say "yeah, 20 ICBM's". However, don't skip the part of the article where they explained about tactical nukes. For those of you that don't know about tactical nukes, those are small nukes that will take out small targets. Mostly to take out ships and such.
I'm sorry I kept this thread going though. This bashing of other cultures makes me sick. But, I find it hard to keep my mouth shut lately.

Dear Red,
the answer is, I only sleep with women who have single beds. It shows they aren't serious about settling down and would rather have their teddy bear collection next to them than a snoring musician. I accept this. It is part of the burden I bear. Someone has to do it. I consider myself a pioneer of sorts of the single bedder bedders. most couches sit in front of the TV. I am hooked on the Weather Channel. It's important to me to know which way the wind blows. go figure.

My post about india was not just bashing the country. It was simply stating facts and my opinion that a country should wory about its people before loading up with weapons.
Is's true that India is a dirty, disease ridden, overpopulated country. There are over 1 billion people living there and the vast majority are extremely poor. It is also true that many Indians bathe in sewage found in the ganjes(sp)river and other HEAVILY polluted bodies of water. I think that the government there should be concentrating on the welfare of their people rather than uclear weapons. Nuclear weapons, as well as any other weapons of mass destruction serve ABSOLUTELY no purpose today.
as for the 2 jokes in my previous post, the idea of a curry bomb made me laugh
Posted by: Lord_Buttplug
I believe bathing in the Ganges is part of the main religion there.
Posted by: JANNA
bathing in the ganges isnt done for the purpose of getting clean it is, as LBP said, part of their religion.
but china doesnt have a real economy there are two chinas. china as the world sees china the communist china is the one without the real economy and consists of an extreme minority of chinese when compared the rest of the country. the chinese govt gets all its money to fuel its war machine through slave labour and selling off its natural resources to the highest bidder which monies go back to fueling its war machine industry. very little to any of the money that is made is actuyally put back into the economy to develop it and help expand the country's ability to generate wealth. the current china has only been around since mao took power and converted the country to communism.
the china that we dont see is composed of the vast majorty of the peasents that take no part in the affairs of their nation and are largley unaware of the rest of the world or care very little to be bothered by it or their govt. yes the country has a couple billion people but their govt could not wage a war that would enable them to utilize that vast population. why do u think it was that Japan in WW2 had little trouble defeating china. the only thing that stopped the japanese conquest of china then was the fact that they ran out of troops trying to defend themselves from american invasions of their islands. the sheer size of china prevented the japanese from finishing the invasion in a timely manner. al throught history china has been conquered and defeated in invasion after invasion. but the real china has never been defeated since the majority of people that form the population dont care and arent willing to participate. they go about their daily lives until the invaders get bored and leave or are incorporated into the culture. little has changed in china since then. the chinese army isnt a threat to anyone cept their border neighbors. the real threat of china is and will remain american politicians selling them the tech to enable them to improve their missile systems. given enough time and enough rope the communist govt of china will cease to exist. the majority of the people of china understand that and continue their way of life not worrying about what the silly coastal chinese do in beijing.

Ak, have you ever heard of Pakistan, itself a break away republic of India. As you may know, there is intense hatred amongst these 2 nations. Now tell me why the US even has Nuclear weapons? Same reason India and Pakistan have nuclear weapons. The reason is simple...fear. It has nothing to do with national defense. It has everything to do with fear of what the other guy might do. Many nations don’t have nuclear weapons, but in the political/military world, your not a nation to be reckoned with unless you have nukes. Many nations fear that they won’t have any pull on the International scene without these horrible babies to back them up.
As for India not being clean, are you joking? India was a British colony at one time. India was clean way before that time. In fact, its inhabitants are as clean as you or I. Where did you get this funny notion from anyhow? Is it their decidedly East Asian culture. Their uncleanness in many western eyes is derived from their dusky skin and many of their religious rituals. Such rituals as bathing in the Gange River on pilgrimage amongst many others. I have known several people from India, and they are not unclean…not by a far shot.
Yes, they have a massive population problem, yes, they have problems with diseases, many of them preventable, but then many countries do. They even have problems with water works and infrastructure in some regions..yes. However their natality rate is going down, much like any other developed country. Point of fact, India is a massive country with a cultural diversity few other countries have had to deal with. Their poverty rate is going down (I think AK you where referring to these folks in your previous posting right?) since the 70s, and their financial strength on the world market is right up there with other power house nations. However, India has aprox~40% of the worlds poor in their country. Most of it can be attributed to regional location and their cast system. Do they have problems…sure….but to say that India is dirty….Bah!

It's hard to summarize the culture of a people in a few paragraphs. All you can really say is that you can find all sorts of stuff in any country. In the States you have corporate Wall street folks that deal with gazillions of cash everyday. Then there are the Southern or whatever, trailer trash that drink beer all day and well, do whatever they do.
Then there is the average family in Seattle, Washington that reads the news, goes to work everyday to support the family, with a nice house in the suburbs.
In China
You have the peasants in some far province that do nothing but farm and try to scratch togehter a living.
You have the political people in Beijing who argue all day and snort at the other countries in the world, making millions of dollars everyday in dirty money or whatever.
Then you have the average family in Shanghai, who read the news, goes to work everyday to support the family, and lives in a nice little apartment in the suburbs.
JANNA is right, 90% of the population in any country probably don't care about the politics or anything.
Posted by: JANNA
ur right about that freak a forum is hardly the place to sum up any country in a few paragraphs expecially a country that has had such a varied history and socio-political history as china. so u kinda have to make some extremely broad generalizations to get a point across
Posted by: AK47
India is not clean- it is filthy. damned filthy
no they dont need nukes- no country needs them. nobody is ever going to use them because they are far too powerfull. If there was ever a nuclear war- everyone would die
Posted by: TotalRecall
The only problem is China is stupid enough to start one, AK. We've already saw how much they care about the US, taking down our planes.
Posted by: Chako
At the risk of playing devils advocate...do you see any Chinese spy planes flying along your coast?
Sits tight for all the flack coming my way for this one!
Posted by: Freak
Cough cough
An American photographer is spotted outside the house of a Chinese family. He takes photos repeatedly of what's happening inside the house. He is (argubly) on the lawn of the Chinese family. Now, what does the Chinese family do?? Take away his camera of course? It's an invasion of privacy isn't it? And as for the 2 sides not apologizing to each other, that's just politics.
And if China and America do go to war, it would be very bad for everyone in this age and time with nuclear weapons.
Posted by: Gerbilo
What is the term? Mutual Assured Destruction? During the cold war the US and USSR had enough nukes to kill the planet like 20 times over.
Mutual Assured Destruction. They launch all they got at us, we launch all we got at them in retaliation, nuclear winter, say goodbye to earth baby.
You know what would suck? if you were an astronaut and the nuclear apocolypse started while you were in space, all alone, that would suck I say. Imagine.
Posted by: AK47
Chako- I'm slow and I didnt understand your post. Were you saying that there are Chinese planes spying on us, or that there arent? (this is an honest question)
I'm quite postivie there are
Posted by: Freak
He's saying what I said.
Posted by: Freak
And China doesn't have planes that US can't detect. The US are dependent on Electronic Intelligence. Most third world- second world countries depend on the old Human Intelligence. I'm quite certain there are no Chinese spy planes flying up and down the East\West Coast.
---If there was, wouldn't you be pissed off?
Posted by: JANNA
thats true the chinese may not be sending anti-submarine patrol craft to search for subs in international waters close to the US but we dont routinely funnel money into chinese political campaigns to influence chinese politics either. nor do we smuggle automatic weapons to chinese shores so that bank robbers in beijing have full auto weapons to use in heists....
Posted by: laborat
I am convinced that China booted all those Buddhist Nuns out of the country because they knew, those Nuns would want to meddle in politics. I have secretly felt for years, (probably since the Motorcyle Maintainence book) that Zen actually belongs in socio-political rather than spiritual new age. Another thing that bothers me is the proliferation of Chinese Fast Foods that deliver.
That plus they always ask for cash not check. This has to be some devious spy network the Commies over there have going. I mean you see those guys everywhere. Since that front for the Chinese Govt. company in Hong Kong bought out the Good Humor company, we could have thousands of agents cruising our neighborhoods in Vans full of elaborate spy equipment and corrupting the youth of america by selling them high fat content ice cream dosed with tofu. But since the Liberals in this country are already bought and paid for, not to mention the Olympic committee, we will have to suffer through the deprivations and angst of a nation in crisis from the Asian Red menace.
Posted by: Chako
Point of fact...there aren't any. China does not fly spy planes along our coasts. If they did, don't you think that some would have been intercepted by US/Canadian planes, which would have caused some international scene by now. Besides, I don't think the US would put up with such. China tends to be a very insular nation. Not saying there aren't any spies within the respective nations, that would be grossly ignorant on my part.
Reason I mention that was TRs posting. Made it sound like this:
"How dare they hold and shoot down one of OUR planes"
This is what I got from that posting...if I am wrong..well then I got it wrong.
Now when I saw the incident on TV, everyone up here was wondering what in the world was a US plane doing way out there. Thought the cold war was over, etc, seemed that they were actively getting themselves into hot water with China. But in retrospect, I soon understood the reasons for it. How else can they keep tabs of mainland china…spy planes and satellites.
As for your being positive there are..why would they need to fly spy planes along the coast AK. Hmmm...the US is a democracy, meaning that gaining entry into both our countries is very easy. Chinese spies do not need to resort to fly byes with super secret top tech spy planes to gather their data. Such things can make a nation look like a fool when something happens to them. Lets face it no nation wants their spying made public. No, China would resort to ground agents for their needs. The other method that the US has no choice but to implement If they want to keep tabs, would not be convenient and probably too costly for China. In other words..there are no benefits for them in using spy planes.
Posted by: Chako
Janna, the US funneling money into China in an attempt to sway their system, is not a secret. The problem is that it will never work. I bet the CIA has seen no benefits to their spending of US tax payer monies. No gains what so ever. The Chinese politician is not an idiot. Why should they not take free money for nothing. I say if they really want to spend money wisely, they should send it where it might do the most good, towards the University sector down there. But, after the Tiaming Square incident, that would be wasting money also....I think the US govt could spend its money on more humanitarian needs then this. As a side note, I find it interesting the China got the Olympics. A nation that is one of the worst human rights violators. Should be interesting to see how they treat visiting nations athletes.
just my opinion.
Funny you brought up small arms.
Just yesterday on the International news, the UN is trying to ban the sale of small arms to troubled warring nations. Guess who is the major stumbling block on this one...You guessed it, the United States. I figure the small arms weapon trade is a lucrative one.
Posted by: AK47
you are wrong about there being no chinese spy planes flying over the US.
My brother is an ensign in the US Nave- Cryptology (intellegence). He knows stuff you and I (and the vast majority of the general public) dont know. security level Q.
I talked to him about the whole US spy plane incident, and asked him various questions. He told me that China does indeed do the same type of flying over the US. He says it is all standard procedure, and that the US plane that was captured was not on any special mission (just routine survelience- something China does as well)
So basically- yes, china does fly over US land and take pictures and whatnot- just like the US does to them. And no, it doesnt make China look like a bunch of fools. We do it and so do they. As far as "ground agents" go, yeah, I bet there are some of those too. Didnt some korean student just get busted for giving US secrets to korea(or somethin like that- I saw it on the news but I wasnt paying much attention)
Just because we are a democracy doesnt mean that all our secrets are out in the open. I think you have a vast misunderstanding of the US and its security levels.
oh and by the way- I must kill anyone who reads this it's top secret ya know.
Posted by: redwench
actually, i believe it was said in the media that the former ussr and china both used spy planes in international air near the us. this is allowed, as is our spy plane in international air space, or ships in international water.
i dont doubt that the collision was an accident, no one is stupid enough to do it on purpose.
as annoying as it maybe, international waters/air space means that others can use it as they see fit.
everyone overreacted nicely to this incident. just as i planned. muahahahaha
Posted by: NetRanger
We could send the goodyear blimp into bejing in 2008...spy plane...nobody would suspect...
Posted by: Chako
Hmmm...Red, it looks like from this article , you don't even have to be in International waters or air space. Somehow this is not spying though. What is the use of spying if the other side knows your there. Go figure!
Here are some more interesting articles
http://www.asiamedia.ucla.edu/Weekl...2001/China4.htm
http://cgi1.usatoday.com/news/world...-spy-planes.htm
The above is interesting because of this snippet I took right out of the article:
"It's not as if China does not conduct similar flights.
Analysts say that China patrols near Taiwan and Vietnam. But while the United States has a global reach, China is unable to venture far from its shores and likely does not have the intelligence-gathering capability of the EP-3."
Here is another one...different source.
http://204.202.137.110/sections/wor...ing_010405.html
Another interesting article. Here is another snippet quoted from the above article:
"China’s Many Capabilities
China does not appear to rely as much on aircraft for surveillance as the United States. One reason may be China lacks forward bases for conducting missions at great distances from the mainland, such as near the U.S. mainland, or even Hawaii.
"I think their application of airborne SIGINT has been limited simply by the limited reach of the Chinese military generally," says John Pike of the Web site GlobalSecurity.org. "It is basically sort of not much more than a brown water Navy, in the process of becoming a green water Navy."
But China's military focus is much closer to its shores anyway, experts say."
One more article to put the last nail in the coffin so to speak.
http://syninfo.com/ian/PRIVATE/2001...1119584090.html
Do I have a grave misunderstanding of US security and world affairs?
I rest my case.

the ep3 was not spying not anymore than anyone walking down the street and over hearing a family dispute is being a peeping tom. the ep3 typically gathers data on electronic emissions from another country. this particular ep3 was looking for chinese nuclear subs. at the time of the accident it took them 45 minutes or so if i remember right flying at 200mph to reach a remote chinese held island so they could land. they were hardly flying over mainland china "spying" spying is when someone is in a country trying to obtain secrets by theft, bribery, or coersion. wen ho lee was a spy aldritch ames was a spy a ep3 is not a psy plane. our spy planes fly a bit faster than a prop plane can go. namely the SR-71. we are slowly moving to remote drone aircraft for spying and satellites in orbit. the US would hardly use a slow ep3 to fly over enemy territoty to take pictures or gather data of any sort. the chinese version is much simpler and probably cost effective. 200,000 for the vice presidency??? and we get the first chinese VP AlGore
