Is it possible to remove IE from XP Pro? If it is possible, is any functionality lost?

I've uninstalled IE, but its not a full uninstall. So if you use Windows Update it loads in IE but the IE icons are not present on the desktop or program list anymore.
Check the control panel ---> add/rremove programs ---> add/remove windows components
If anyone does know how to FULLY remove please let me know.

IE is fully integrated into XP Pro at the operating system level. You cannot completely remove it. Thank Microsoft for that one.

yah, I know the half-way method to kill IE too. I just finished up a test of Mozilla's new browser, Firebird and it kicks. I really like the whole "tabbed browsing" idea. It really reduces clutter, especially on my laptop with it's smaller screen area. I would definetely recomend it to people, but I do think it is a bit of a memory hog, however, the newer builds do seem to cut down on that a bit. It is still only available for Windows, RedHat, and Mac on the major OS side. C'est La Vie eh?

Shalome,
the reason I asked was that I could have sworn that I heard M$ made a fix to completely remove IE if desired. It could have been talk about SP2 which is still a bit out, not sure though.

No, they released a patch that would allow you to remove the IE icon from your desktop. The core of the program itself is still there.
In their anti-trust settlement, they were ordered to have the ability to offer a more modular (and potentially IE-less) version of their operating system to computer manufacturers if the manufacturers so desired. Maybe that's what you're thinking of.
Once your system is shipped with IE on it, the most you can do is remove it with the Add/Remove button in the Control Panel. The core of the program will still be integrated with your operating system, but you will have removed the end-user's (i.e., your) ability to access IE itself. This removes more than just the icon on the desktop, it removes the functional elements of the program.

As Shalome said, there is no way to totally remove IE as it is an integral part of the OS ... Windows Explorer uses the IE component to browse your files, and if you are using Microsoft Office, then IE is a requirement ... you can simply stop using it and make Mozilla or any other browser your default so you don't have to deal with it when surfing the Internet, but in Windows Explorer or other MS apps, you will need it...

I started using Netscape and have grown to like it...... Don't get me wrong I still like IE but I needed a change of scenery
Netscape has some interesting features, I like how it uses tabs on the top for mulitiple pages and you can also download skinz.....
Windows without IE will never happen, not as long as Bill Gates is running the show
