Mysterious error

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Everytime I attempt to access anything on my computer, such as Internet Explorer, a miscellaneous folder, and even the Control Panel, I receive the following error: "The module was compiled with a trial version of Delphi. The trial period has expired." The only option is "Ok". Basically, if it runs, I can't run it. If it's a folder, I can't open it. A few things to elaborate on- I don't compile, program, or do anything like that. I don't even know what Delphi is. I don't know where it came from, why it's crashing my computer, or how to make it stop. I literally woke up one morning and there the error was. I didn't even restart my computer or anything, so it is literally something that happened overnight. The only program i can get to work so far is MSN Explorer. I hate MSN Explorer, so plz help me!
A few more interesting tidbits: Every Delphi error I get opens a non-responsive item called "SysFader" in my Task Manager. Any task on my task bar appears in the format "Delphi Error- (program name)". My adware/spyware sweeper did not detect anything Delphi-ish and delete it, and an up-to-date Norton Antivirus scan turned up nothing as well. I am operating a current-update Windows XP Home Ed., with a 2.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor, 512 SDRAM, and about 93 gigs of free HD space. PLZ PLZ PLZ help, this thing has shanghai'd my PC!!!

im puzzled, thats just..........

google the error, theres a search box at the bottom of this page. see if anything turns up. if not, my best suggestion would be: pop the XP disc and and use the repair function. if that doesnt help, format and reinstall.

Look for a program called SysFader in your add/remove programs list, and uninstall it. Or any program that might be the same thing. Sounds like a program you have installed was compiled with a trial compiler, and it hooked in to windows somehow, and so it's trying to run all the time, and failing. Uninstalling the offending app should fix it.

I did google it...that's how I found this webpage. A few more things I forgot to mention... I did a System Recovery back a couple days, to no avail. I want to avoid a total system recovery, as I have various school things, what-nots, and thingamajigs on my computer that I can't copy safely because I can't even open the various folders they're in!!! This is exactly how much of a mess I'm in.

I appreciate the help, really, but I CANT GET TO MY ADD/REMOVE MENU. That's the problem. Everytime I try to access anything from My Computer to Control Panel I get the same error and I'm back to square one. All I know is that it's starting to frustrate the hell out of me, because everytime I get the damn error I have to wait about a solid minute for the thing to finish crashing and gimme back control of my PC.

you dont need to open things to copy them. just drag and drop them to another drive. its not the data files that are screwy, its your programs. any method of copying the files will do.

Can you run your registry editor? If you can find the exact name of the offending program, you can search your registry, find where it launches, and disable it.

edit: This is assuming it isn't some kind of windows program or dll.

Okay, let me put it this way. I have a desktop, and on this desktop there are a host of folders, all with names like "Biology 203" or "Chemistry 113" with all my term papers and homework and such. I d-click on one of those folders to gain access to said term papers/homework and the same error pops up, denying me access and crashing me back to the desktop. I try to go to the My Computer through the Start Menu and I get the same sequence of events. I cannot get beyond my desktop is what I'm saying. If I was able to actually physically click the files, then yes I could copy them. See what I'm getting at?

Now we may be getting somewhere...how do I get to RegEdit?

Posted by: Null Actor

Maybe see if another windows file browser will work. Have you tried using Windows Explorer? Can you run your start menu? You can also try typing C: in to your IE window, and browsing from there.

Posted by: xX Skatz Xx

IE won't load...it's where I first noticed the error in the first place.

well, first of all, try to see if a background program is impeding you ... go to START -> RUN -> type msconfig and hit ENTER ... go to the Startup tab and see if there's any checked program that may be related to your problem ... the Delphi error you are getting is a result of some productivity software you installed recently ...

To access regedit, go to Start -> Run -> type regedit and hit Enter... be careful how you fool around in there though, since it may cause your system more harm...

Okay, the Services tab of MSConfig shows only two items working: A two Remote Procedure Calls. They appear identical, but one is flagged as a locator and one is not. They are both listed as essential (Essential = Yes) and they are both products of the Microsoft Corporation. The one identified as a locator is also labeled as "Stopped" while the other is labeled as "Running". As for the StartUp tab, NOTHING is checked (which is, to my knowledge, the way I had it before).

As for the RegEdit...it's a total nightmare for a techno half-wit like me to look at. I didn't immediately find any references to "Delphi", but I did find a Borland folder which, as far as I can tell, is where this terrorist Delphi originates from.

Posted by: Null Actor

Delphi isn't your issue, it's whatever program was compiled with delphi. Two separate issues.

Posted by: xX Skatz Xx

any idea how to narrow it down? My guess would be that it's IE, since it's all the IE-usable programs that are crashing out to the desktop

Posted by: nocode

Have you tried booting the computer in Safe Mode?

Try that to see if it will let you get beyond your desktop.

Posted by: xX Skatz Xx

So what do I do if Safe Mode works? how do I rectify the problem? Someone suggested reinstalling IE...

Posted by: v pratt

I understand delphi is a module and I have to find the program in order to delete but why now and what program--I have the same exact problem as previous posts--

Posted by: trekpsycho

If you can get into safe mode, you could unistall the program, or if nothing else, at least back up your files.

Posted by: xX Skatz Xx

I don't know what program is causing the problem...

Try looking for that. Also, if you uninstall any programs that you recently installed (within past month or so) maybe you might get lucky. At least you could look for any suspect programs. And as I said, at least you could backup your files so that you could do a format/install without loosing anything. (had to do this myself a time or two). Cheers!

Hey, just a thought, try setting your clock back a year or so.

Posted by: v pratt

resetting the clock back a year did the trick...it gives me the means to systematically delete software and reinstall-- I am wondering if it is plug-in for explorer that might be the problem.
thank you

Have same problem
Running XP Professional
Same message, not @ startup, but when I try to access Windows Explore, Internet Explorer, the Start Menu etc.
However, all other programs work fine, including Outlook Express.

Found an Immediate (but not final solution) FIX = set computer date back to date before expiry ie; day before problem started) That keeps me running in the interum.

Running MANY programs, Several AutoCAD flavors etc etc - Regedit is not where I belong, might hurt myself irreparably. Also, system restore failed.

Not sure how to identify which program, if any, has caused this??
HELP!!!
Not sure how it attaches to & stops some XP components, seems it should not?, but it sure does, whether from installed program or some other entry form.

But, for those also caught, TRY the above short term fix to keep running till it can be fixed - it does work.

GOT IT!!!!!
- for me it was a program called "CPR" - found it in Contol Panel > Add / Remove Programs > CPR

Could not find it under "Program Files"

So, Backdate your windows Clock to before problem started > that should allow you to run all programs > then, check for CPR or any suspicious other program > Uninstall or "remove" it. It could be another program, not necessarily this one.
I have no idea what "CPR" does (other than messes up Windows), or where it came from.

Reset clock back to current. If you have the correct program, you are running again .

Seems to me Borland should take responsibility to help us folks - it is their software & it should never apply itself to Windows components ????
I have the luxury of removable imaged hardrive to test my theory knowing that I can go back to fixed drive if I screw up windows, most do not have that luxury - if you can "image" your C Drive, do so as precaution first.

My Thanks to all here - tips were helpfull to staying on target.

Confirmed - both identical drives A1 now
