Pros Cons of overwriting unused drive space

I was wondering if using a disc erasing utility has any benefits other than stopping data retreival ie. help eliminate corrupted fragments , viruses lost files etc... on the unused space.
I currently just use registry cleaner to check and fix along with scan disc.

And any suggestions on disc maintainance would be appreciated.

no. there are programs that address those issues. the only reason to erase a disk is if youre going to sell it.

There aren't any cons I'm aware of. The computer doesn't normally 'erase' files on its own, only flaggs them to be overwritten if needed, and treats the sectors like theyre empty. All the program does is actually empty them. There is no bad part of doing this, and only needs to be done if you're giving away a computer, or you're really really paranoid.
