Office XP hangs up laptop

My laptop is experiencing the same problems described in this post: http://www.opentechsupport.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5787. No IPX
Printing to a network printer also hangs the system.
OS is Windows XP rather than 2k. I'm running a wireless home network, and wireless connection at school as well.
Please advise if you how to fix this. Thanks.
