C drive folder/file management

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Opening up to veiw contents of C drive I have programs installed that are not in the Program files folder; and I somehow have a second program files folder (with one unwanted exe.file).
My question is can I organize these folders/files as I do other folders ie. drag and drop or other means to condense and organize them without frigging something like registry paths in the process.
If so what is the proper way to do so.
My C drive folder is getting cluttered with programs that I would assume to be located in the Programs folder.
Since this clutter started becoming noticable I have paid more attention as to where programs are being directed during install.I have learned how to change the (directory?) during install but I am uncomfortable straying from the default settings.

I have browsed the guides and help to no avail.

Thank you all once again for your time and patience.

it doesnt matter where the programs are located. program files is just another folder. but if you want your stuff there for convenience, just drag and drop. occasionally run a registry cleaner to sort out the dead entries, although they shouldnt cause any problems.

The only thing you'll run into is that any shortcuts to the peograms that you move may have to be pointed to the new location of the program. Sometimes that will happen when you move a program to a new folder.

That's what I thought but I wanted to be sure.

What about exe. files that arent in add/remove program list. Are they safe to delete without losing a possibly shared dll. ?

Some are, depends on the program. Generally, I've noticed that if it didn't install but justs runs from the .exe itself that it must be safe to delete, at least I haven't had any trouble. But don't take my word for it, see if someone else knows for sure.

delete or uninstall? if you delete a file, thats all that gets deleted. uninstall will remove associated files as well, although generally will warn you if its shared.

The few I wanted to get rid of are exe. files that only run from the exe. files themselves. They don't have an uninstall option that I can find.

When uninstalling programs and I get prompts for possibly shared files like dll.'s I always avoid uninstalling these, is there any way to know if dll.'s are not needed ie. in windows or maybe a utility I could download to remove uneeded ones? If so is there any real need to do so?

I've never had any problems with leaving them in. Don't belive windows when it tells you that those .dll's aren't being used by other programs though, it lies!

some registry cleaners will check dlls. but its really not necessary, just leave them in.
