Not Responding

I have a problem when I try and open any kind of files in stored in "my documents", my pictures", "my music". My computer just hangs and when I try to close the unresponsive task through task manager, my desktop icons disappear. The only way to recover is to re-boot. It's as if I'm missing a file that links the icons to the programs however I can open these same files through their corresponding applications (Word, Media Player, graphics). This problem started when Norton picked up a couple trojan horse viruses and quarantined the file msinfo.exe. Everything else on my computer is functioning OK and strangely enough, one of my 4 user accounts is unaffected by this problem. System restore didn't help. I would appreciate some advice....

boot from the xp disk and use the repair option.

I've reloaded XP (not a clean install) without luck but haven't tried the repair option. I'll give it a try and thanks for the advice.
