Windows Media Player won't play a CD

Trying to play a CD, whether bought or burned, produces the following message: "The selected file has a file scheme that is not recognized by Windows Media Player, but the Player may be able to play it. Because the extension is unknown by the Player, you should be sure that the file comes from a trustworthy source." Then you click yes and you get the next message: "Windows Media Player cannot find the specified file. Be sure the path is typed correctly. If it is, the file does not exist at the specified location, or the computer where the file is stored is offline."
I received this on Windows Me with WMP 9. This solution worked to fix the problem: I verified the audio CD driver (mcicda.drv which is located in C:\Windows\system folder) was not corrupted. This file is in the Win_16.cab file on the Windows Me CD. [NOTE: if you have to replace the above file, make sure System Restore is disabled before doing so, otherwise you'll reload the corrupt version on reboot.] Open the system.ini file and under the heading [mci] add the line: cdaudio=mcicda.drv
This line was missing from the system.ini file. Reboot the pc and it should play the CD properly now.
