New DVD Burner

So I bought a new DVD burner for myself.... I have about 10GB of data I can't lose so I figured a DVD burner is a good way to back it up.. right?
It bought the Lite ON dual format model that writes at :
40x CD-r
24X CR-RW
4x DVD +R/-R
2x DVD +RW/-RW
Any thoughts on this model? The GF decided she wanted to wrap it up for Christmas so I haven't used it yet. I haven't seen any reviews about it at either. When I bought it I hoped it would be good, past experience with Lite On tells me that it will be great.... they have pretty solid products.
What about Must have accessories?
I will not be ripping DVD's and saving them to my hard drive(have better use for my space), but I will be making copies of my extensive DVD collection. I am very anal about scratches, and I figure whats a better way to protect dvd's from scratches than a copy of them so I never have to use the original.... right
So anywho what software do you all use for copying DVD's? What brand of DVD's do you buy? If DVD's are anything like CD's, Then there will probably be certain brands I should stay away from.
edit: I tried to do a search for DVD threads on the forum... but I couldn't find anything.... so a pointer to a DVD burner thread would be very helpful too!!
Man has this site changed... it took me 10 minutes to try to remember how to search the forums.
