Corruption of JPG files from digital Cam stored on PC

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Am experiencing corruption of jpg files from my digital camera when stored/transferred from my PC in “My Pictures”. I use Windows XP home edition on a Pentium ® 4 CPU 1700MHz, 1.7 GHz, 256 MB RAM. . The corruption is loss of ability to open/view the files using any STD feature for viewing. Expert friend finally found SW to open files & found files had been corrupted with series of ks with umlaut rather than original data bits though total amt of data in file was approximately the same. The corruption tends to occur ONLY after I have copied the digital pix from my PC to CDR and CRR/W’s for backup. The corruption occurs sporadically; of 6 digital jpg files I transferred to CDR, only the first 5 were corrupted on my PC, but 6th was OK and all files were OK on CDR. The 5 corrupted files were NOT corrupted immediately after transfer, but rather 4 days later when I next opened the files on my PC (the exact files now stored on CDR remain fine). This has happened several times now. I have run latest versions of McAfee and found no viruses, yet behavior is virus like. Any suggestions on solving the problem?

run more virus scans, mcafee doesnt catch them all.

I had the same problem. Like Red said, before you go any further, update your virus protection and run agian. I found that my files were currupt but a virus wasn't in play. I purchased a photo enhancement called PhotoImpact and used it to associate and to open and rename the files and then reopened all the files that were falsely stated as currupt without a hitch. The key is, when you upload the files to your pc, is to use photoimpact to save as jpg. even if it is already a jpg. With stubborn files, save as bitmap then rename and save as jpg. You shouldn't have any problems with any files after. You should also note what you name the files and which ones you have problems with. I found using certain characters related to problems.

To both Rock and redwrench:
I update McAfee virus files daily & have run dozens of times - nothing found. Tried online virus detection program today from Trend Micro - nada. Can u suggest one to try?Not anxiuous to purchase additional virus protection on hope alone! :-)

Rock - I don't understand your response in the sense that I downloaded original JPG pix from camera to PC and they were OK. I viewed them many times as the original JPG files while on my PC, they were OK. I copied them to CD R & R/W and they were OK. BUT only those files that I copied to CD media magically became unreadable on my PC, but not all, and not everytime. No dialog box or virus protection program ever said the files were corrupted; it was only after a very knowledgable friend finally found a SW program to open them, was it determined that all data had been altered to "K's" & presumably is not recoverable.

Do u still think this is still same problem as u had? Would u still suggest that I purchase Photoimpact? THX!

not much gets by trendmicro's, but grisoft has a free one thats fairly good, esp as a supplement to your regular one. i would encourage you to make sure your computer is completely sterile. ive run 4 different av scans, 2 trojan scans, and 2 spyware scans in one day when i had a suspected problem. the 4th av scan is the only one that turned up anything, and it wasnt relevant, unfortunately. although its good to get rid of a dormant virus anyway :P
er.....back on topic.....run a bunch of security programs to make sure you dont have a critter, or nothing will help. next, try uploading some meaningless pics to the computer, then make copies in another folder. then burn one of the sets, and see if one or both sets are affected.

Stephenie,

If some of the burnt pics aren't readable only on occasion or can be read then not. While in the burning process there could be electrical interference. I know this sounds far fetched but it happens. Photimpact may not be the solution to your problem. Make sure the outlet that your computer is attached to is not on the same line as any driven motor..i.e. garage door opener, fridge, microwave, ceiling fan. I have run into just about every problem outside a nuke that messed with my pics. I had burned a cd that only half the files were readable because of the ceiling fan motor... I found out later...was interfering with the burning process. I switched outlets that was not attached to any motors. Fundamentals....Bad for pc to be on same line as any other motor. THis is the only thing I can think of right now that could be the cause for the intermittent problem your having. If your on a good outlet then photoimpact will take care of the problem. Red expressed a good alternative if you dont go with another software. Make copies of the pics and burn both copies. This might give you a clue of whats happening.

and the reason above is why UPS are recommended :P

Thanks to both of you!
I'll give both suggestions a shot, will take a few days I suspect, and see where I go from there!

Hi Redwench, Rock!
Stephanie here. The problem was (with 95+% certainty) the Microsoft CD burning software that comes with XP. Purchased ROXIO Easy CD Creator and have been burning jpeg files to CD without flaw or corrution since.
You both had good suggstions and I tried all of them before I came to conclusion that my problems were with the Microsoft XP product's CD burning SW.
