PC Freezing up

Yes you have heard this one before.I am experiencing problems.
My system consists of:-
Windows XP Pro SP1 (build 2600)
AMD Duron 700 Mz
Award Software 6.00PGN Circuit Board with RIVA TNT2 Chipset
Video BIOS version 2.05
384 Meg Memory
20 Gig Harddrive
The processor runs at 78 F and the fan is good
Modem BT Voyager 100

I understand the Video BIOS is old, dated 13.03.00. Could this be the problem. If so how do I modify and where do I obtain an update?

LOOKING FOR ADVICE !!!!

The sysyem freezes up at any time I do not have to be using it. I can be out of my room and return to find it locked, or it will freeze during booting up.
To reboot I have to depress the reset button twice but this still leaves my Modem locked.

Help

Have you installed any new hardware?

XP is loaded with programs you will probably never use or need. After booting up and to point of desktop, see what programs are running. Most will not specifically tell you what they are. This is just a starting point. After time you will recognize what some are.
It sounds like your system needs a good cleansing. AV protection could be causing your sys to lock. If you haven't tried disabling it yet, try that first. I found, that with real problem os, that you would save a lot of time by backing up all your personal files and to reformat. If your HD is not partioned I highly reccomend partitioning and reformatting. Dedicate only 3-5 gigs to your C drive and the rest on 1or more partitions.
Defrag at least the C drive periodically. The smaller and more orginized the os drive, the faster the sys will run and will reduce locking up. Keep in mind, xp needs a little elbow room, If you decide to partition and format. Run AV first.

Customize your install to just include the bare bones for operating sys.
At this time I think it would be hasty to make any bios changes.

After partitioning, formatting & installing os, run scan & defrag.

If in the future, you have problems with the clean install and wish to re-format C, you will have in tact, all your files that you save on your partion(s). Include personal files and saved games to the partition(s)

AS insane as this might sound, another alternative would be to partition, reformat and install Windows 98 se instead of re-installing XP. XP has too many bells and whistles. Win 98 se will take a little getting used to, but would be well worth it. It is my opinion that it is still the best os.

Thanks for all your info. I forgot to list that I had already formatted the hard disk and reinstalled a fresh copy of XP hoping that this would have cured the fault.
