Laptop failure; +power, -boot

I woke up this morning to find that the laptop I had left on overnight was off. The power indicator was lit (I'm running off AC power, not battery), suggesting that the power source is fine (unless it would still be lit if it was fried/disconnected somehow). The power button, however, does absolutely nothing; no booting, no spinning hdd sound, no BIOS screen, etc. It sounds like the motherboard was fried randomly to me, but are there any other ideas?

Have u tried holding the power button in the off position for about ten seconds to see the light will go out? My HP laptop used to do the same thing when it would go into standby mode and that was the only way to get it to turn completely off. Also, if I remember right, mine has a way to reset the laptop without the power button (by using a paper clip in a small hole on the side i think). Maybe u might check on that. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.
Unfortunately this laptop doesn't have that small hole. The power button isn't even a button per se (it's one of those drag-to-the-side-and-then-release-while-it-goes-back-to-original-position switches. don't know if that made sense). I tried holding the power switch/button in the On position for up to 60 seconds, without any effect (except a sore thumb). I also have the Standby and Hibernate modes only enabled when on battery.

I know what u mean about the power button. What kind of laptop is it? And I too, had those options with standby and hibernate. That's what made it so aggravating when mine would do it to me.

It's an Acer. If you're familiar at all with Acer laptops, it's the TravelMate 330T (must be, what, 4 years old? maybe 5?). One of those extremely light, travel-friendly notebooks. *sigh*

Well, I'm fresh out of ideas, maybe go to their web site and contact support? Here's the link. Good luck

Remove the battery completely from the unit and try again.

Heheh, it gets kinda complicated... You see, the battery was perma-attached to the system some years ago (superglue, I presume) because it kept sliding out (I wasn't the owner at the time, so that's my best guess).

It could be shorted out and be the problem. That's why I recommended removing it.

Hmm... I thought of that, and I think that's the other explanation. I guess I'll shell out the money to Acer's tech support and see if they can fix this. Probably replace the battery while I'm at it. If worst comes to worst, I'll have an external hdd for the other system, and some random spare parts.
Thanks for all the help.
