Computer Lockup Problem

I have a Compaq Presario 5000 series, 700mhz, 384mb ram (1 stick 256, 1 stick 128), ATI Radeon 7500 64mb PCI, with Windows XP installed. I have been having problems with my computer locking up on me all the time. When I visit web sites that have some sort of flash or java on them, my computer will almost always freeze. When I try to launch some games, such as EverQuest, it freezes as soon as the game launches the patcher. When I am watching video clips, it will freeze randomly throughout the video clip. I have tried many different things to get it to stop freezing, such as formatting the hard drive, taking out each ram chip, switching the graphics card slots, and running a memory tester program. Please let me know if you have any solutions or suggestions. Thanks!

Do you have all the latest patches?

first, update the bios. second, run windows update and get all the criticals, and the dx9 recommended.

I have all the Windows updates and Directx 9.0b. I haven't tried updating the bios though. I will do that next. I have the latest ATI drivers, and I switched back to my onboard graphics to test if it was my graphics card, but it still locked up with the onboard.

Does the Compaq BIOS have the opportunity to set:
-AGP memory aperture
-AGP speed
Do you have the AGP GART set to off in the Catalyst Settings? What version of Catalyst are you using.
Also, DirectX 9 is NOT required unless you are playing games that require it. If you playing nothing but older titles there is no performance justification for it, especially for older cards like the 7500 which aren't DirectX 9 compliant. Let us know

My motherboard doesn't have an AGP slot. That is why I am using a Radeon 7500 PCI. I am using the CATALYST Windows XP 3.9 driver.

I think I might have a solution for you....
You need to try and mess with your memory configuration. Remove one stick, then see how it goes. Try the other....
If neither solves your problem go and find a new piece of memory that you know works and try it.
You need to eliminate the memory before you try and further problem-solve your issues.

I removed one stick and it still froze. Removed the other and it still froze. I've run out of ideas to try.
