System locks up as soon as this error msg appears.

"Msgsrv32.exe is a program (Windows 32-bit message server) that performs several background functions necessary for Windows operation. They include Load installable Windows drivers at startup and unload them at shutdown. Runs the shell program (Explorer.exe) and re-run the shell if it fails to respond. It mediates Plug and Play messages among various parts of the operating system and coordinates automatic responses to Setup programs. This includes checking whether a Setup program has improperly overwritten Windows files, and optionally restoring the Windows versions of those files."
MSCAT32.dll is a catalog file for Internet Explorer 5+. Check what version you are using, and try upgrading it or a reinstall. It's also possible that the software that came with the scanner is not compatible with Windows 98. I think MSCAT32.DLL is part of the crptoAPI tools so thats why I wonder if its a software conflict. Check it out on the system requirments.

I'll look at a few more sources and get back to ya if I find out something.

MSCAT32.DLL is part of Internet Explorer 5 and greater.

You may have spyware thats causing it to lock up, a virus or Internet Explorer might be corrupt. First thing, run adaware(make sure you run the update utility with it to get the latest reference file).
