How Much Ram

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi,

I am building my first PC after years of buying them I want to try and build my own.

I will be using an Intel D875PBZ Mother board and P4 266Mhz processor. My question is how much ram should I get, is 512MB {2x256 DDR} enough or should I get 1024MB 2x512). Also how important is it to get brand name Ram? I will be using the computer for gaming and work as well , would the extra ram improve game FPS or not?

Regards,

Karl

Its not really important to get major brand name ram now, a lot of the smaller companies are making really good ram. I personally would get GeIL brand. Newegg.com has it very cheap. Of course the cheapo brands are still cheapo, so you stay away from those.

If your gaming, and have a good video card, get the 1024mb. It would cost around $160. If your not gaming, get 512mb.

Right now 512MB is the sweet spot for RAM. Unless you're going to be doing some h4rdc0r3 file serving or multitasking a bunch of 3D Rendering programs and power Photoshoppin', 1GB of RAM isn't going to justify itself in the extra cost. If money is not an issue or if you can get a good deal on it, sure. Just don't expect it to make a noticable improvement on most things you do on your computer.

Not very important, really. Even generic OEM RAM gets the job done, but I'd advise getting a name brand (Corsair, Crucial, Kingston, etc). You don't have to go all out and get Corsair XMS Platinum; Corsair Value will do just fine... unless you plan on overclocking and/or running your RAM at absolute minimal timings/delays.

It might. Will you notice the improvement? Doubtful. Games are most heavily dependent on CPU and Video cards. Remember, you *don't* want your video card having to use system RAM -- that' s a big hit in FPS. This is why video card vendors keep upping the RAM on the card itself.

ugh, 512 doesnt cut it now for any modern applications. your system will run slow on 512, unless all youre doing is browsing. if you can afford it 2x512 is the best idea.
for brand, the most important thing to consider is that all your ram should be the same brand. so buying a common brand will ensure adding more later is much easier. some brands just dont like each other, PNY is noted for its inability to play well with others.
if you get the value line of kingston, samsung, corsair, or most others, theyll be priced competitively with each other, and will work fine unless you overclock, in which case get the premium.
ram shouldnt improve fps unless you have an old card. what it will improve is the non-graphical performance of the game. you should see less lag and stutter, and load times should decrease. but the improved cpu will do that as well.
the only negative to more ram is the cost. if affording it isnt a problem, buy more

I remember when I built the original Gerbilo masterpiece... i bought generic brand memory... 128mb of PC133

AND IT COST $144
