Hello, this is very annoying, and it happens without warning sometimes. When it happens i have to pull my internet connection out, because my firewall does not restart and virus scanner, like it is only my none essential programs that restart like my mouse pointer program, and keyboard control program, so i can use my extra keys on it. Anyway when it happens i just log out after it has finished reloading and relog back in again, but i should not have to do that, and also sometimes i have to log out and log back more that 3 to 7 times. If you want to know about my hardware and software i run please ask, i have not listed it, because it is so much stuff now adays and also i have more than 100 background programs running, it takes 4 minutes to load windows xp, they said it was faster, rubbish. Thanks

100 programs! running in the background is most likely what's causing Explorer to crash, which is what's happening when you lose your programs next to the clock.

Posting your computer specs would be a good idea if you expect to solve your delima.

climate prediction program takes up 50 meg of memory and uses 50 percent proccessing power, also the UDagent takes about 40 percent processing power, but this is only 18 meg of memory. when my system goes funny these programs are still running, but the only programs that don't restart are my firewall and virus scanner McAFee. My seti program is still running and my mouse and keyboard tray icons are there and my usb modem diagnostics is still there, sometimes when it comes back, it hangs, and if i move the mouse over the task bar the mouse oes busy, also i have found it to be easier to log out and log back in, it is faster, this only takes about a 2 minutes, rather than a complete restart which can take 5 minutes or more. By the way i do not have any problems with any games i use, and sometimes, when i load all my startup programs in it stays like that for days, i leave my computer on 24 hours a day 7 days a week, and lets say on monday i play a game on it like Rainbow six 3 raven sheild, and i have all programs running in background, the game is still very fast with 3d graphics. then i went to bed and left my computer on, next day i played another game this game was Farscape the game, with the background programs still there. this fault only seems to happen if i either put a usb device in like my zip 750 drive, or open hard drive up to look for files, or start my win dvd player off. This is what i have observed.

While i was writing the last response i have reduced the number of programs running in background to 60 programs, used to be over 100 programs

Anyway here is my hardware

MicroATX Box
40 gb hard disk with windows xp on, ata 133, using sata converter
80 gb hard disk with all my games on, 52 percent full, ata 100
LS-120
CD-rom rw
2048 meg of system memory, running at 400 mhz dual channel
intel p4 at 2.4 ghz, at 800 mhz bus speed, hyper threading
at moment i am using the internal grahics card intel extreme 2
but i normally use Geforce 4, 440 MX, AGP 8x, 64 meg memory

And my board is a P4P800-VM

the VM = micro ATX version of the P4P800

This board has 6 channel sound built in 4 ide devices at ata 100, and 2 sata, and the board can take a 3.4 ghz and beyond processor

I hope this information is ok, i tend to go a bit extras sometimes.

well my processor bus speed goes at 800 mhz, i hope the buses are not crashing by going at that terrific speed, more like 800 miles per hour, faster than a blinking eye.

Just a Joke, lol

Did that help your start up time? You are heading in the right direction by reducing the number of programs running in the background. I would be most suspicious of that weather program that uses 50% of your processor. Even though you have the hardware specs to handle all of those programs running, you are killing your overall system performance by allowing that weather program to run all of the time.

I have realised that the UD agent also tries to take 40 percent processing power, and if i leave it idol it take more, but this one seems to only take more power if it is available, not like the weather client, that takes 50 percent all the time. Anyway i have not had much problems yet by reducing my programs. but only time will tell. I will remove that weather program though, i have found out it takes 900 meg of hard disk space, and it takes 4 weeks to complete a run, it has just finished completing a run, but i did not realise it would restart from begining, i thought it was a one off type program. Anyway i will see how it goes for the next 2 - 3 weeks. thanks for your help.
