Woman in Tech Support...
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)
Posted by: devine
To fellow females out there...
In dealing with tech support customers/callers do you find that some men ask to speak to another man?
Is there any where out there where we too can get respect in the tech support field?
Posted by: redwench
No.
Posted by: Matt.M
That's mean. I never knew there was sexism in the ots fields at all ...
Lets go kick sexist pplz asses!
Posted by: chaosisreality
As a favor to laggy, I won't flame this.
And btw, to those that understand what I'm talking about, this belongs in the Hugry thread section at TMOL.
Posted by: Canis Lupus
It's a legitimate question ... I don't see why it is "flameable" material ...
oh and chaosis, I wasn't asking you for a favor, I was asking you to follow the rules... there's a difference...
Posted by: Matt.M
Ryte. Big dif. there, big man.
Posted by: laborat
I often ask for a female for advice when I know the woman giving me advice is a 12 year old boy masquerading as a female techie.
Posted by: chaosisreality
Believe it or not, it doesn't matter the sex. No phone techie knows anything anyway, except their immediate supervisor. Don't believe me, call up dell support. (Yes, you can see I called them today)
Also, there aren't many female techies (*Prepares for wench's attack*), mainly because they aren't that interested. It's not a high paying job. In the company I first worked for, they're tech support was mainly male, but the scattering of females knew their stuff better. In the current company I'm in, the management decided to hire about equal amounts of the sexes to disallow any claims of "Sexual harrassment". Basically means, all but a few of the women on the staff were almost illiterate, and didn't even know how to turn their computer on (I was called down there the other day because they had a claim of two broken computers. One was legitematly broken because of an overheat, the other was unplugged. The outlet was a foot away from her. I asked her, why is it unplugged? "Oh, last night i was talking on my cell phone and it was making too much noise, and it takes too long to power down". Tech support, my friends)

Any sexist thread is a flame magnet, and second thing I explained to you in a PM.
And I'm saddened no one made a comment on the TMOL joke.

I would say the ones asking for a man are the backwoods redneck guys.
Posted by: Andrew7689
The reason why i would choose a man to answer my question about technical support, is that some women accuse men of flirting, and being mucky minded, i find that very offensive when a women says that to me. I am only being polite with women, also i am not one of those types of man, but some women are to quick to judge a man without getting to know him. And yes i have spoken to a women from technical support from my internet service provider. And the truth about the conversation i had with her, is that she did not seem to have enough training and was getting confused and panic, but she asked me to ring back later, to talk to a man, she did not know nothing about the problem. But other than that if she had the training, she would of been ok. Plus i can talk to women better on the phone, Men seem to be like robots on the phone, men have been pre programmed to ask questions and give answers, but women are not like that on the phone they think more about things and if they are unsure they ask someone in the company, that is what the lady was doing that i spoke to. Please not this is my opinion, and i don't mean it to offend anyone

I was shocked when I first heard of that when I was working as a tech. It was for a very large ISP, and they went through techs pretty quickly. The result was that only about 5 or 10 percent of us actually knew what the hell we were talking about, and when one of the better ones told me she frequently has both men and women ask to speak to a man it reall blew my mind. It made me laugh, too, because I knew how many times people had to call back to get someone who isn't clueless, and these people were passing up one of the good ones for no reason.
On the flip side of that, if you support the general public, you know you have to give extremely simple, step-by-step direction -- exactly what to click on, and exactly where to see it, etc. -- or you'll end up out of sync with the user, and the call will become a disaster. So some people think you're talking down to them, when the truth is you're likely talking down to everyone. Every once in a while some b*chy woman would say something like, "You don't have to talk to me like I'm an idiot just because i'm a woman." I always wanted to reply, "I'm not. I'm talking to you like you're an idiot because you're an idiot," but had to give a more mundane reply attempting to explain that it's important for us to both be on the same page, and I talk to everyone the same.
Guh.
Well, to make a long story longer, I think that stigma of women in IT is slowly evaporating. A big part of the problem is that women rarely go into IT. If you walk into a large tech center or industrial server room complex, you see very few women there. Now, if you walk across the street to marketing, it's packed with them. As long as women don't go into IT, it will be seen as a male oriented field, and the more dense and simple minded people of the planet, both male and female, will assume it's related to a tie between gender and competence. Personally, I just think that most women are more emotionally develloped than men, so they're less likely to choose a career hiding out in an empty, sterile server room or a dark office hacking away code rather than interacting with other people.
Something like that, anyway.
Posted by: redwench
i hate people. a nice sterile server room would be perfect.

That's why I work in them
But it's more common, for whatever reason, I personally think it's social conditioning of boys, women in general tend to be more able to deal with other people then men in general are, so women (in general) are more attracted to jobs working with people, while men (in general) are more likely to shun them in favour of jobs working with things. That theory also fits well in fields like sciences, auto mechanics, construction, cullinary and other arts, etc. Things, not people, and all male dominated.
Who knows the real reason why, though. Either way, to assume that it's an inherent intelligence flaw in one gender shows those users to have an inherent intelligence flaw.

I mean as a profession. Yes, it's extremely male dominated. My ex got to go to culinary school for free just because she's a chick, and there are tonnes of very lucrative scholorships by womens professional associations that pay for any female to take any classes to get into a male dominated profession. Women don't go into that profession any more than they go into IT, science or math. Same with other technical fields like photography and art (not including fashion design or advertising).
There's no reason for them not to, there aren't really any physical requirements for heavy lifting, but they don't. They always go for the more people oriented fields like psychology, marketing, HR and crap like that.
Well, I guess I should be glad, and you as well. If there were a sudden flood of women into the field, it would increase the workforce, thereby lowering our value in the shift of the supply/demand curve.

I want to thank all those out there who respect the question as a legitimate problem in the tech support field.
However for those who have never felt the stigma of being told you aren't as good because of your sex or some other thing that has nothing to do with being good at what you do.
I work in a tech support office with 13 men and I am one of two woman. Remember the most feared woman on the net Netochka Nezvanova, girl/woman tech's out there, check her out.

And remember men, the best role model for your life is Diogenes the Cynic, helps a lot with social skills.

Man?, Women?
The first 30 seconds tells me what they know.
I have received help from both sexes.
The sound of a womens voice keeps me on the line a little longer.
The same if the male was between 12-16...the kid knows a lot of s--t.
I have a nephew that has rebuilt computers but decided to be a Freedom Fighter. I'm really jonesin' man. That's why I stopped by the OTS.
Men understand pc's in a way most women can't. It's due to the instant gratification. SPEED, VISUALS!!!!! INDY, DAYTONA...you know.
Like when a dude has the TV remote compared to a women with a TV remote. She'll stop at the channels longer to smell the coffee...a guy is already done with 5 cups.

A) not all men (or most) are like you, i personally dont watch tv like that, and i have more then a 3 minute attention span
B) Maybe possibly everything in life shouldn't be done in 5 cups of coffee time.
C) It sounds to me like you’re just not patient enough for good help, and if its a woman trying to help you, you blame their lack of wanker, instead of your ADHD

D)These make any difference how? The only explanation for these quotes i can see is option C). Can't get your head off the fact that your talking to a woman long enough to pay attention to what they are telling you. And you call this sporadicness superior? HA!
Posted by: rockshalton
Xon you missed it!
MOST, and I stand by that.
On an average and the following means and it is in MY experience that more men dwell on sex. SEX is what I am talking about, and I know this is straying from the original post. When my 3 neices, 2 sisters, mother, grandmother, my neices Girlfriends... so on, when they have the remote control to the TV, they aren't as quick to surf. I am not saying this a bad thing, if at all it's good thing. They are seeing things that we miss. It is simply an observation I have made. I didn't want to be too wordy and I don't think of myself witty at all. I love women and what they stand for. SEX drives men more than women. I know sex doesn't have much to do with rape, but who is guilty of more rapes...Men? - Women?
Instant gratification CONTROL, POWER!
Men are more likely to leave the bed after sex than women take away the bathroom.
I respect the most beautiful creature god has placed on this earth more than anyone I know. I LOVE looking at them. I love talking to them.
The 30 seconds applies to EVERYONE and that is not saying- I'm a good judge of charector.
I would only hope to talk to the PERSON most knowledgable to my unique pc problem...MAN or WOMEN...It doesn't matter to me.
IT DOESN"T MATTER-FEMALE, MALE.
Speed, think about that one SPEED is not always better.
But it works for me.

In addition, AND I KNOW THIS IS REALLY STRAYING.
I am a black man who always cringes at other black persons blaming things everything on white folk. I'M NO uncle TOM and I always to my own actions, take responsibilties. Some were justified, some weren't. I am proud of my heritage. My mother, my BLACK MOTHER (a women) never felt that she was being discriminated against because she was a women. Yeah, she had it toughbecause my father was the provider and she stayed home and chose not to expand her knowledge through books 9 at that time it was BOOKS) That was HER CHOICE. She is happy and has white, asian, black friends. There are so many different colors out there. So many different shades of black.
ARE there differences between a -MAN--WOMEN
DAMN STRAIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In closing, I would like to add that I do not believe that men are superior to women.
CAN a women do everything a man can do. WE know a man can not give birth to a child.
RESPOND....
CAN A WOMEN DO ANYTHING A MAN CAN DO?

all that means is your families female side and their friends are smarter then the men, that does not say anything about women as a whole, just your family

not only does this not make any sense, but even if it did, it would have absolutly nothing at all to do with anything what so ever.

Reffering to the last post applying to the subject of women & men. First I will later post a question on how to link a previous post as reference. 2nd. I think the person who posted the following question will find the intended feedback in the post marked "Can women do everything a man can do?" interesting.
3rd. I have plainly stated the person's knowledge is the only thing that would matter to me when calling or posting a question.
In going back to the POST-A WOMEN IN TECH SUPPORT, the Women's question, "Do women in tech support feel they are being discriminated against.
I was in error in replying to this post as it was aimes toward a women's response.
All men that replied to my post " Can women do everything a man can do? and vice versa. Stated YES or some stated that they felt that women were smatter than men.
My point to light (in my experience)
My answer is of course to the idiotic question... intellectually is YES.
Why do some women in the computer tech field feel they are being discriminated against?
Posted by: rockshalton
Looking for responses from women only to the question of why a women in the computer tech field feels discriminated against.
Men, feel free to respond after a womens perspective is established.
Posted by: redwench
because they are?
Posted by: redwench
probably because they are.
they are less likely to get hired or promoted than an equal male counterpart. they also get treated like idiots by coworkers, customers, and even sometimes supervisors.
Posted by: rockshalton
Red, I wish I could change that. I would not hesitate to ask for your advice.
Could you provide me with an example?
Posted by: rockshalton
Red, this male has always (since acquired own mind ) has treated all with respect and equality. If you called for tech support and the person who answers has a huge southern drawl, would you be hesitant at first, thinking you would like to speak to someone else. This is just a curious question that applies to all gender and races.
Posted by: redwench
hesitant yes. would i ask for a northerner? no, unless i literally couldnt understand what the person was saying. and yes, ive had phone conversations with customer support people that have had horrible accents of one kind or another. i have sofar managed to decipher what they were saying, and not had to ask for another rep. although i think that day is coming soon, since companies apparently dont think about that problem when they hire people for phone work.
Posted by: rockshalton
Red, I liked you from the get & I'm liking you more.
Understanding the person is what matters.
Unfortunatley, the other may feel discriminated against.

is there a particular reason other than trolling for this persistant women techie topic?

I'm not the following:
Troller, Lurker, Harasser nor obviously good at opening doors to cdrom's...to let you know since you have responded.
This post was to simply gather the TITLED information.

PSD#1,
The reason is:
I responded to a post titled A Women In Tech.
I was expanding upon it with a new thread.

Expanding is one thing but starting new threads with the same topic but new titles is just spam.
I would suggest just sticking one thread and keeping all of these discussions you've started there.
