Dell PC won't log Security Events
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

We recently received 2 new Dell Latitude D600 laptops. Neither will log log-on attempt failures or successes in the Security Event Viewer. They will log log clears. Both run Win2K, and are configured the same as other Win2K PCs that log security events without problem. The difference is in Local Security Policy - although configured the same
as the others that work OK, the Audit Policy Effective Setting for the Dells is "No Auditing" and seeemingly cannot be changed.
We're running a domain controller but find no problem there. So far, Dell has been unbable to explain the problem. Any/all help will be very much appreciated!

Okay, the simple version is that Dell screws over their computers. I have a lot of experience with Dell machines and almost all of them have some sort of quark like that. In past experience the only way to solve these problems is to reinstall the OS. It would be better to intall a non-Dell version of the OS but if the Dell disk is all you have, it will work. Use the NTFS file system if there is an option (I dont remember is there is for Win2k). In a perfect world a full reformat and install is better, but a simple repair probably should fix the problem. Once you have completed the installation of Windows DO NOT INSTALL ANY OF DELL'S CRAPLICATIONS! These are what screw up the system. Install the original manufacturer drivers and original vendor versions of the software. This should fix you up fine.
BTW: Dell tech support is useless.

Hi...
Do you have auditing enabled in the global security policy on the server. If you enable this it will force all your clients to audit log.

I use 2000 only. 98 is pants and xp is just 2000 with a few more whistles and bells bolted on
If you need any further info I would start a thread.
Not wishing to be rude or anything but its not good to post off subject q's in some one's thread !!!

You should seriously use XP. I know that i am not supposed to deviate from topic, but sense this is a support forum, you clearly need some support. Win2k is a lot slower than XP, it looks uglier, and it is a lot harder to use. Not to mention, XP Pro builds on the security of win2k to make the system more sound. Furthermore, win2k is just about the worst OS for software compatibility under the sun, precluding you from playing many games, as well as using many pieces of software. A lot of people think that XP is just win2k with extra crap, but really it is not. It is an entirely new OS and really the first that Microsoft can and should be proud of.
