Problem copying a DVD file to Hard Drive

Our company had a party this past week, and some really precious memories were recorded onto a co-worker's digital camcorder. Today, he brought in his copy of the recording on a DVD+R. The disc contains a 4.5 gig AVI file. I brought it home thinknig I could just copy the file onto my 80GB external hard drive. For some reason, however, it keeps telling me that I don't have the required space. I have over 65GB of space left on this drive!

I thought it may have been something with my external, so I tried copying it to my internal drive (freed up about 6GB of space)...same message. Can anyone please tell me what it is I'm doing wrong? I'm running Windows XP Home Edition, and I have an internal DVD-ROM.

I am not close with the co-worker who made the recording, and I have to return the disc soon, but the file on this disc is something I'll want to cherish for the rest of my life. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Does your DVD read DVD+R? Maybe you might have to have a program to rip DVDs.

I'm sure it does. I've already seen the AVI clip.

Is it just an avi file burned on a DVD or is it burned as a fully functioning DVD that you could put into a standalone and play?

Can't you just ask your co-worker to burn another copy?

A program called DVD-XCOPY would do the trick
