Get arrested at Def Con

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Go to the Def Con Hacker Convention at your own risk.

Dmitry Sklyarov, a programmer for the Russian software company Elcom, was arrested on Monday at the Las Vegas convention. He had just presented his paper on problems with Adobe eBook and PDF security.

His company sold less than a score of copies of a program that stripped anti-piracy protection mechanism from the Adobe software. He is currently in jail and awaiting trial under violation of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

I always kinda knew the FBI will be hovering like vultures in those kinds of conventions, but this is the first time I read about them actually nabbing someone over there ... hehehe, oh well, one down, a couple thousand to go....

Yikes harsh words there Mancini. Clearly your not American I take it. I find offense in your last words....and I am not even American.

Posted by: Kdr Kane

The full moon must be out. That's three inappropriate posts today.

Posted by: Mancini

im sorry u think my post inapropriate but thats the way things are going

Posted by: Chako

Kane..you get the wolfbane, I shall get the stakes and garlic.

Posted by: CETORT

hmm ...

might wanna tone it down a bit there Mancini

Posted by: Bishop

while I agree with his last statement about americans in general, so far everything he's posted has been an example of the reason I agree with his statement.

amusing.

Posted by: AK47

Wasnt this going on in another thread? ;(

Posted by: Kdr Kane

hmm... This thread got moved from Software to Rants and Raves after some idiot posted on it almost a month later violating the rules of the Software Forum?

Or am I just being too critical?

I'm thinking that Mancini is just a grief poster.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

I think this thread now rightfully belongs to Rants and Raves, after the last two or three comments...

Let's all keep namecalling at a minimum ... we've had enough threads today with insults in them ... let's not add more...

Posted by: AK47

where are these namecalling threads

*gets book of dirty names out*

Posted by: Freak

BTW,
this guy has now been released on a 50,000 dollar by his company.

Posted by: JANNA

this mancini person is why we americans want nothing to do with other countries cant ya just feel the goodwill...

Posted by: redwench

gee, im an american, and im not offended. if anything, i agree with him, although i like to think my vocabulary is a bit more elevated.

we are a nation of undereducated, arrogant, demanding, whining fools who seem to think that we know whats best for everyone on the planet.

i think ill stop there.

for now ^^.

Posted by: Chako

Yikes...I wake up this morning...read the threads and find out this one is going to the dogs.

Posted by: AK47

yeah, the other ones are alot more friendly than this one

Posted by: Wargasm

we had sorta the same thing here in holland 2 weeks ago .
the news papers reported hackers gathering , cops will arrest !
the ppl who organized it went super open and cyber cops (i cannot believe i am using this word hehehe) where invited in each camping tent .
there where some hardcore hackers there .. but all in all it was a good party and the cyber cops did not see any illegal activities according to the newspaper except ppl becomming one with their machine

Yup, HAL sounded like a blast. Wish I could've been there.

The guy's right about one thing and that here in the states
he who has da cash walks and they who have no money
go to jail!!!!!guilty or not matters little for the most part
unless the press desides to make an issue out of it.a few years back when billions that's right boys n girls with the b got
stolen from the savings and loans only one outta ten
big time crooks went to jail and the rest walked all the way
to party land with the loot , even some who got nailed walked
away with most of what they stole! Just goes to show ya that
if you wanna steal in the good old usa do it big cause if you
do it small you go to prison to be bubbas new girl friend!
but.....if ya do it big and grease the right hands you can
walk away rich , who says crime don't pay when folks like
dear ole billy bob gates can break a thousand laws
and laugh all the way to the bank!

Skylarov was arrainged early this week and pleaded not guilty in court. He'll wait for his next court date.

I couldn't figure out why someone in a foreign country should be liable for a law here in America. I only read yesterday that his company's website was hosted in America and all sales when out through America. I'm guessing that's the reason.

I'm predicted one of two outcomes.

The government will drop the charges because they are afraid of losing the case.

- Or -

He will be found not guilty simply because the law is a bad law. It's vague and very general in nature.

I downloaded the DCMA and read some parts of it. It's not a happy read at all. This is a law that abrogates everyone's freedom and let's big business control your life.

The fed wants what it wants and gets what it wants when
someone is dumb enough to put themselves in easy reach
of the FBI,ATF,etc.
Most americans hav'nt gotta clue how this goverment really works and if they did they'd s**t thier pants with fear!
cause big bro's alive n well and doing quite well while most folks
think it's still like the good old days! Ever see robo cop!
the goverment as part of the corparation is slowly but surely
becoming reality so much sooner than you think!
Happy Nightmare ya all
