i have recently had a pc built its an amd 2800 with 512 mb mem and a ti 4200 128 graphics card...my problem is that my pc keeps switching itself off..this only seems to happen when i run a game which requires a bit of power such as moh or soldier of fortune 2 when my wife is playing sims or just surfing it behaves perfectly...i have tried a new graphics card and a new fan on the processor but to no avail...any help would be much appreciated..thanks...my pc bios stats as follows
cpu warning temp (off)
current cpu temp 65 . c / 149 f
current cpu fan speed 4115 rpm
current chassis fan speed 0 rpm
shutdown temp (disabled)
thanks

Worth a try.
Unplug the power switch from the motherboard and turn the pc on by using a piece of metal to short the two pins on the motherboard, just touch and take away, dont keep them connected.
oh and dont touch the case while doing this, and use screw driver to insulate yourself, so that you do not accidentally fry your motherboard

goboddog did not say the pc would not turn on at all. Are you going to buy him a new computer if he KILLS it?

Post you power supply specs. It sounds like either a power supply issue or Heat. Look in your Bios to see what your system and cpu temps are.

how do i get the power supply info

That's Hot. Being that you checked your temps through Bios, that means your cpu is that hot while your computer is idle, so there is no telling how hot it's getting when playing games that are cpu intensive.
Try playing the trouble making games with the case open, preferably with some kind of fan blowing directly into the case. Check your temps in Bios after doing this also. The permanent solution is to lower your case and cpu temps by achieving better air flow. The way you do that normally is to tidy up all of your cables/wires that may be blocking air flow. Clean all dust that may be contributing to air flow blockage. Possibly add more case fans and a better quality cpu heatsink/fan combo.

yup, youre cooking your cpu. if opening up the case doesnt help, i think the heatsink needs to be reseated, using a ceramic thermal paste. if you dont feel up to this yourself, have it done with you watching, after you have read up on how to do it. make sure arctic silver 3(?) is used, buy it yourself and bring it if necessary. a lot of shops use low quality junk, which works fine most of the time, but not always.

ran a game for 45 mins and the temps went up to 73.c / 164 f from an idle temp of 65.c / 149 f
anybody have any idea what the temps should be???
Posted by: redwench
idle should be under 50, preferably under 40. max under load is around 65 or so

Does anyone know of any tools that will tell what the temp is while the computer is running? I'm using a Dell Inspiron laptop, so I can't see that kind of stuff in the BIOS.

ive had a new fan and heatsink installed and added an xtra case fan and my pc is still running very hot (idleing at 60 . c) i used a dual fan for the processor so i dont know y its still so hot?????

unless youre running in a bakery, your heatsink hasnt been installed correctly.

everything now sorted (i hope) heatsink and fan re-installed idleing at about 50 going up to 60 after a few hours of intense gaming.....thanks very much for your help
