computer went tits up...

Ok, im on my laptop right now, but my main computer went tits up.
This is what happened...
Ok, for many weeks, every once in a while when i started my computer, it would not actually start. After hitting the power button it would just turn on all the fans, the lights to the cdrom drives would turn on but everything else just sat there. Hdds wont start up, nothing. I get no text on the screen at all.
Strange thing is, I would leave it be for a few hours, and try again, and it would turn on fine. Everything would run fine like nothing happened...
So Im like, wtf, oh well. Keeps happening for a few weeks. Then it starts getting more frequent, and the time it takes for me to wait for it to work again gets longer as well.
So where I am now. I have been trying for 3-4 days to turn it on, nothing. I just get fans spinning. I have tried another power supply which I know works, and same results.
specs are
2200+athlonxp
abit nf7-s or something with sata
1024 pc 3200 ram
80gig ibm hdd 7200
45gig ibm hdd 4500
geforce4 ti4200 128meg
etc..
Thanks for any ideas. I am considering bringin it to a shop and just letting them deal with it, but Im not sure if it will end up costing me more that way.
A friend of mine said I should try resetting the CMOS or whatever on the motherboard, any ideas?
Thanks.

On your monitor the near the power button there is a light that shows if the monitor actually has power/signal. Is that light green or and amber orange?

Sounds like you HD is starting to seize up.

i would bet against a hdd problem, if it was the hard drive it should still start up at least until it tries to boot from the hdd. you could try reseting the bios, but it could be your motherboard just going bad.

Yeah, sounds like the motherboard has been dying. Like a malfunctional voltage regulator. That happened on my Soyo 440BX board not too long ago. Kept not wanting to start, then boom.. It just up and died. But try reseting the cmos. If that doesn't clear it up, use the T&E method. Try taking everything out until you have only the essentials, mobo/ram/CPU/video and of course power supply and monitor. If it still acts up, try a different mobo or ram or even a CPU. My best thoughts though, is that the motherboard has a problem.

Thanks alot for the replys, I will probably try just resetting the bios. And worst case I have to RMA the board, that is if I can find my invoice, otherwise its 100+ for a new board, which would suck, but its probably cheaper than bringin it to a computer shop and givin them 60 and hour to tell me my mobo is f'ed up.
Oh, and to the first guy, the monitor light shows orange.
But I know that nothing is starting up.
Anyways, ill try it tomorrow, got stuff to do tonight, ill reply with what happens.

Well, it sounds like you've got bad hardware components. I'll bet it has something to do with the temperature. Sometimes if the device is too cold or too hot, the physical wires start to drift apart and it might drift far enought to crap out your devices. I'll bet that the time it takes to actually get started is because its warming up. Try putting it in a place where the heat dissapation is very limited, like in a closed computer cupboard or something and see if that speeds up the starting delay or gets rid of it entirely. Or a quicker method, shut down your computer after you've been using it, and then turn it back on right away and see if the wake up time is delays. If it is, then it confirms my theory that it has to do with temperature.
If my theories wrong, then I guess there's nothing else I could help you with, not that I could help if my theory was right anyways. Well, good luck and tell me how it goes.

You need to replace your powersupply, that should fix your problem

Hello
I had these problems and you are using the wrong memory for your processor, and also the board is going into a state called thermal shutdown, and if you don't rectify the problem soon about having the wrong type of memory in then goodbye to that board and getting a new board will not solve it if it is this problem.

Are you sure...?
I have 1024 DDRpc3200 Geil 400mhz ram, 2x 512 sticks, the speed is supported on the motherboard I believe. And the processor is just a Athlon 2100+xpI think, maybe its a 2200 ill have to check.
But anyways... if what you say is true, I have some other ddr ram lying around or could maybe borrow someone. So if thats true, if I stuck other ram in there you think it would work?
And what is thermal shutdown?
EDIT: Actually now that I think aboutit, I started having these problems a little after I did upgrade to that ram. You may very well be correct. But, problem is, if the computer isn't starting anymore, does that mean that the motherboard is already screwed and switching the memory will not do me any good. Also, if this is the wrong memory, how can I tell what the correct memory should be.
Both Memory and Processor are fairly new from newegg.com and can still be RMAed if I have a problem. But I think my motherboard is past its date, or I cant find the invoice :\ Luckily a new motherboard is only around 100 bucks, but still would suck. I would like to get out of this without forkin out too much doe. What really blows is I just got my new videocard in the mail... sigh... nice new Radeon 9700pro and I cant use it, and I am dying without my beloved FFXI which I havn't been able to play in weeks. Oh this sucks
Thanks for all the help though, ill try some other ram, if that dont work, Ill reset the bios on the motherboard, if that dont work, I will get a new motherboard, and consider rma my ram. But I would really like to know why I would be using the incorrect ram... Thanks.

its not the wrong ram, unless you accidentally got ecc or something. you might have a faulty chip however. try booting with just 1 ram chip.
it sounds like a power supply or motherboard issue is most likely.

Hello
To check if it is the wrong memory then this is the specs it should follow
Make sure that the memory is not working at 266 mhz, if it is then that is your problem, this type of memory cannot run at slower speeds than 333 mhz.
Doing so may have damaged your board.
And also you are recommend to use the same make of memory, like if it is NEC memory then, all the cards should be from NEC for correct stability.

Well I have two sticks of the exact same RAM, which are 400mhz.
Anyways, I tried booting up with no ram installed, and I got no error sound, which leads me to believe the motherboard is dead, therefore...
I RMAed both my motherboard, and the ram for the heck of it back to newegg.com. So hopefully I can get this all fixed for the small cost of shipping it to them.
When I install the ram again when I get my stuff back, I will make sure both are running at their correct speed of ~400 mhz.
Thanks for all the replies guys.
