I've heard of people updating their BIOS, but i've always heard of people frying, or almost frying their motherboard in the process? Is it a good thing to do?

Personally, I've never heard of anything like that. I have a Dell Laptop and update it whenever an update is available. It's really a brainless operation as you just download the update, save it to disk and usually just reboot and the rest is automatic except if it asks you if you want to replace your current BIOS.
Really, there is a chance to screw up your motherboard, but there is also a chance that your heatsink on your processor isn't on correctly and your processor is going to start smoking.
I think I made my point.
Hope it helps!

its generally safe, although its usually not recommended you update your bios unless there is a good reason to. if its necessary, theres no need to be afraid, its very rare that anything permanent happens.

When creating this boot disk, can it be from a cd? Also whats the deal with flashing the bios, is that before the update? And is the order that you update your drivers, bios, important.
